The Internet of Things (IoT) is an extensive network of heterogeneous devices that provides an array of innovative applications and services. IoT networks enable the integration of data and services to seamlessly interconnect the cyber and physical systems. However, the heterogeneity of devices, underlying technologies and lack of standardization pose critical challenges in this domain. On account of these challenges, this research article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the enabling technologies and standards that build up the IoT technology stack. First, a layered architecture approach is presented where the state-of-the-art research and open challenges are discussed at every layer. Next, this research article focuses on the role of middleware platforms in IoT application development and integration. Furthermore, this article addresses the open challenges and provides comprehensive steps towards IoT stack optimization. Finally, the interfacing of Fog/Edge Networks to IoT technology stack is thoroughly investigated by discussing the current research and open challenges in this domain. The main scope of this study is to provide a comprehensive review into IoT technology (the horizontal fabric), the associated middleware and networks required to build future proof applications (the vertical markets).

Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (BD&AI) have become so pervasive, and the opportunities they present so transformative, that they are viewed as essential for competitive growth. Since the number of firms adopting BD&AI technologies is growing exponentially, the demand for BD&AI practitioners is also growing at a rapid rate. However, several studies indicate that there is a BD&AI talent shortage and skills gap between labor market requirements and expertise available in the current workforce. This talent shortage and skills gap are now recognized as a crucial impediment in leveraging BD&AI for economic growth at the local, national, and global levels. This research aims to identify BD&AI workforce trends, gaps, and opportunities by using bibliometric analysis and extracting insights from job posting data. The study team first conducted bibliometric research and built word cooccurrence diagrams using BD&AI related articles published in high-impact journals to determine technological changes impacting various industry domains. The team then collected job postings data and summarized the skill sets required to be competitive in industries driven by BD&AI. Finally, the study team evaluated the curricula of BD&AI programs at various colleges and universities educating the future workforce and conducted a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis to bridge the gaps between industry needs and academic training. This multi-step research framework forecasts oncoming technological changes in various industry clusters, workforce skills that are and will be needed, and provides recommendations for a workforce development roadmap so that businesses can gain a competitive advantage through the use of BD&AI.

Circular Economy Performance Measurement in Manufacturing Firms: A Systematic Literature Review with Insights for Small and Medium Enterprises and New Adopters

The circular economy is a central and increasingly important topic within managerial and academic discourse. Although the circular economy could bring benefits to their performance, manufacturing firms still struggle with its adoption. As an effective adoption should pass for adequate performance measurement, the present study performs a systematic literature review to deepen the knowledge of circular economy performance-measurement systems for manufacturing firms, both from a general perspective and to provide specific insights for small–medium enterprises and new adopters. The results show the lack of an integrated, holistic, and scalable framework for measuring circular economy performance, and only a few and dispersed specific indications for small–medium enterprises and new adopters. Shortcomings of the extant literature are identified in terms of integration of the circular economy’s level, theoretical development and empirical application, characteristics of the indicators proposed, considerations of sustainability, holistic perspectives on industrial systems, and scalability to adapt to firms’ different characteristics. The study paves the way for further research while offering theoretical and practical implications.
