The influence of vibration duration on the structure of irregular RC buildings

Abstract: In the twenty-first century, the seismic design of buildings seems to have become a fully recognised topic. There are guidelines and standards which should be taken into account by designers in seismic areas. Designers using modern international guidelines have ascertained that the behaviour of structures is not as expected. This may be the result of not taking into account the duration of the shock. The duration of surface vibrations could be one of the basic reasons why some buildings collapse or suffer seve… Show more

“…Low-intensity para-seismic events (mining tremors) can also generate a similar impact on humans as vibrations from road traffic. Research on this topic of residential and office buildings was presented by, among others, [40][41][42]. In these works, the permissible norms for vibrations of low intensity (comparable to road vibrations) were not exceeded, but the vibrations were so burdensome that they interfered with the living conditions of residents.…”

“…This problem is approached with a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) by using the wellknown and extensively validated commercial software DIANA FEA 10.3 [19][20][21][22][23][24]. The main adopted hypotheses for setting up the model are listed below:…”

“…First, the area disturbed by a quake is smaller in case of mining shocks than natural events [11]. Second, the duration of the intensive phase of vibration is shorter for mining tremors [12]. Third, in the case of mining events, the dominant frequencies are located in the range of 2-30 Hz.…”
