The paper presents the response of two geodesic domes under seismic excitations. The structures subjected to seismic analysis were created by two different methods of subdividing spherical triangles (the original octahedron face), as proposed by Fuliński. These structures are characterised by the similar number of elements. The structures are made of steel, which is a material that undoubtedly gives lightness to structures and allows large spans. Designing steel domes is currently a challenge for constructors, as well as architects, who take into account their aesthetic considerations. The analysis was carried out using the finite element method of the numerical program. The two designed domes were analysed using four different seismic excitations. The analysis shows what influence particular earthquakes have on the geodesic dome structures by two different methods. The study analysed the maximum displacements, axial forces, velocities, and accelerations of the designed domes. In addition, the Time History method was used for the analysis, which enabled the analysis of the structure in the time domain. The study will be helpful in designing new structures in seismic areas and in assessing the strength of various geodesic dome structures under seismic excitation.
There have only been a limited number of analyses of soil–steel bridges under seismic and anthropogenic (rockburst) excitations. Rockbursts are phenomena similar to low-intensity natural earthquakes. They can be observed in Poland (Upper and Lower Silesia) as well as in many parts of the world where coal and gas are mined. The influence of rockbursts and natural earthquakes on soil–steel bridges should be investigated because the ground motions caused by these two kinds of excitations differ. In the present paper, a non-linear analysis of a soil–steel bridge was carried out. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam blocks were used in a numerical model of the soil–steel bridge to buffer the seismic wave induced by a rockburst (coming from a coal mine) as well as a natural earthquake (El Centro record). The analyzed soil–steel bridge had two closed pipe arches in its cross-section. The span of the shells was 4.40 m and the height of the shells was 2.80 m. The numerical analysis was conducted using the DIANA program based on the finite element method (FEM). The paper presents the FEM results of a 3D numerical study of a soil–steel bridge both with and without the application of the EPS geofoam under seismic excitations. The obtained results can be interesting to bridge engineers and scientists dealing with the design and analysis of bridges situated in seismic and mining areas.
The design codes and calculation methods related to the corrugated steel plate (CSP) bridges and culverts say only on the minimum soil height. This value is connected with the bridge span and shell height. In the case of static and dynamic loads (like passing the vehicles), such approach seems to be reasonable. However, it is important to know how the CSP bridges with high the soil covers behave under the seismic loads. This paper is presented the result of numerical study of CSP bridge with different high cover under seismic excitation. The analysed CSP railway bridge in the cross section has two closed pipe-arches. The span of shells is 4.40 m and the height of shells is 2.80 m. The load-carrying structure was constructed as two shells assembled from CSP sheets, designed with a depth of 0.05 m, pitch of 0.15 m, and plate thickness of 0.003 m. The real soil cover depth over the CSP structure (including ballast, blanket and backfill) equals 2.40 m. In this study two heights of soil cover were analysed (2.40 m and 5.00 m). Numerical analysis was conducted using the DIANA program based on finite element method (FEM). A linear model with El Centro records and Time History was used to analyse the problem.
