The influence of high sintering temperatures on the mechanical properties of hydroxylapatite

Abstract: The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of stoichiometric hydroxylapatite (HA) has been studied up to 1500°C for the purpose of determining the maximum admissible combinations of temperature and time for sintering HA. The influence of the sintering temperature on shrinkage, density and grain growth is then investigated in the temperature range from 1000 to 1450 °C. Nearly theoretical density was achieved above 1300 °C. A maximum fracture toughness is obtained for the samples sintered at 1300°C whereas hardne… Show more

“…To fabricate PLGA/HA composite material, we used nano-sized HA particles. Highly crystalline HA degrades over a long period in vivo, and incompletely degraded residual HA may hinder or retard complete bone healing 25) . Therefore, we reduced the total amount of HA and simultaneously enhanced HA exposure to the scaffold surface by using nano-sized HA particles instead of micro-sized HA particles 19) .…”

“…Fluorescence was measured in a spectrofluorophotometer (Spectramax M2, Molecular Devices, Sunnyvale, USA) at excitation and emission wavelengths 480 nm and 520 nm, respectively. In some studies, DNA contents of 2.5×10 5 , 5×10 5 , and 1×10 6 hMSC were determined. Using this standard curve, we estimated the number of cells in the cell scaffold complexes.…”

“…However, their clinical applications have been limited because of their brittleness, difficulty of shaping 4) , and a slow degradation rate in the case of hydroxyapatite (HAP) 5) . Increasing interest has currently been focused on polymer/ceramic composite materials as bone substitutes [6][7][8][9][10][11] , because these materials may have advantages over polymer and ceramic scaffolds.…”

“…Fourthly, a chemical decomposition of all acidic orthophosphates and their transformation into other phosphates (e.g., 2HPO 4 2-→ P 2 O 7 4-+ H 2 O↑) takes place. Besides, sintering causes toughening [247], densification [248,249], partial dehydroxylation (in the case of HA) [249], as well as it increases the mechanical strength [250,251]. The latter events are due to presence of air and other gases filling gaps among the particles of unsintered powders.…”
