The increasing value of plant-made proteins

Abstract: The production of high-value proteins in plants is maturing, as shown by the recent approval of innovative products and the latest studies that showcase plant-based production systems using technologies and approaches that are well established in other fields. These include host cell engineering, medium optimization, scalable unit operations for downstream processing (DSP), bioprocess optimization and detailed cost analysis. Product-specific benefits of plant-based systems have also been exploited, including b… Show more

“…Protease inhibitor disinyalir sebagai produk yang memiliki nilai ekonomi yang tinggi dalam sektor pertanian dan kesehatan dikarenakan memiliki kemampuan anti-mikroba dan anti-virus (Bijina et al, 2011;Islamov et al, 2012;Sack et al, 2015). PI bekerja dengan cara menghambat, menghidrolisis, mengubah atau menonaktifkan protease yang diekskresikan oleh patogen sehingga menjadi avirulen (Ryan, 1990).…”

“…Foreign proteins can be produced by using either transient expression in leaves or transgenic expression systems in whole plants or plant cell culture. 1 Both transient and stable systems are fully scalable and several large scale manufacture facilities are available, including those that satisfy good manufacturing practice (GMP). 1 Recombinant protein yields are widely variable and depend on numerous factors such as plant species, promoter, enhancers, incorporation of intron sequences, mRNA stability, 5 0 and 3 0 untranslated regions, codon usage, protein folding and stability, etc.…”

“…The increased use in agriculture sector as an antimicrobial agent has positioned plant protease inhibitors as an important product (Bijina et al, 2011;Islamov et al, 2012;Sack et al, 2015). Isolation and characterization of protease inhibitors from various plant species have been carried out using affinity column chromatography (Bijina et al, 2011;Popovic et al, 2013;Al-Assadi, 2013, Bunyatang et al, 2013Chaudhary et al, 2008;Sabotič et al, 2012).…”
