The Importance of Nutrition in the Prevention of Ocular Disease with Special Reference to Cataract

Abstract: Background: The lens is the ocular structure most susceptible to oxidative damage. Antioxidants, micronutrients and phytochemicals have been extensively studied for their possible effects to prevent or delay the progression of various eye diseases. Objectives: A brief overview of the updated literature on the role of antioxidants and micronutrients in the prevention and treatment of ocular diseases is to be presented with an emphasis on cataract. Data Sources: PubMed search and individual papers from journals.… Show more

“…61 The consumption of food-based antioxidants like BC seems to be useful for the prevention of macular degeneration and cataracts. 62 It is also available in synthetic forms and is commercially processed from substances such as palm oil and algae. BC has potential antioxidant biological properties due to its chemical structure and interaction with biological membranes.…”

“…This, in turn, triggers the release of insulin, whose adequate secretion by the pancreas and efficient uptake in muscle, liver, and fat tissue counters the dangerous buildup of glucose in the blood and, in the long run, the onset of type-2 diabetes 14 . Antioxidants like BC seem to be useful for the prevention of macular degeneration and cataracts 15 . BC has potential antioxidant biological properties due to its chemical structure and interaction with biological membranes.…”

“…This has been supported by the protective effect of physiologic antioxidants, like phenolic compounds, carotenoids and vitamins 8 . Recognition of the roles played by natural antioxidants in delaying the onset of cataracts has opened new avenues for the treatment of cataracts 9,10 .…”
