The importance of meteorological scales to forecast air pollution scenarios on coastal complex terrain

Abstract: Abstract. Some of the meteorological approaches commonly considered in urban air pollution models do not take into account the importance of the smaller scales in the meteorology of complex-terrain coastal sites. The aim of this work is to estimate the impact of using the proper meteorological scales when simulating the behaviour of the pollutant concentrations emitted in the lower layers over coastal complex terrain areas. The availability of experimental measurements of a power plant plume near the Castellón… Show more

“…Nevertheless, as only surface variables are analysed in the current work, we strongly believe that the model top employed is adequate to fulfill the purpose of this study. Furthermore, we must remark that, in terms of temperature and wind speed and direction, the results found in the present study are comparable to those found in other studies using additional vertical levels and reaching a higher model top (Palau et al, 2005;Pérez-Landa et al, 2007). …”

“…The Kuo- (Molinari, 1985), whereas grids 2 and 3 utilizes explicit convection only. This convective scheme has been adopted based on previous studies performed within the area of study (Palau et al, 2005;Pérez-Landa et al, 2007). Finally, the LEAF-2 soilvegetation surface scheme was used to calculate sensible and latent heat fluxes exchanged with the atmosphere, using prognostic equations for soil moisture and temperature (Walko et al, 2000).…”

“…The RAMS model (Pielke et al, 2002;Cotton et al, 2003) has been used at the CEAM Foundation for different research studies (Salvador et al 1997;Salvador et al, 1999;Gómez-Tejedor et al, 1999;Palau et al, 2005;Pastor et al, 2001;Pérez-Landa et al, 2007). The results obtained have provided us with the necessary know-how to develop and implement a meteorological forecasting system based on running the RAMS model operationally Gómez et al, 2010).…”

“…More recently, Palau et al (2005) have highlighted the importance of the different meteorological scales for air quality studies in the coastal region, showing how surface observations do not always reflect the vertical distribution in the atmospheric column.…”
