The history of economic development of Javanese community has experienced a very unique dynamic. In the XV and XVI centuries, trading tradition has been done by Javanese community along the north coastal of Java. But, the trading tradition getting dimmer in line with the strategy of economic centralization carried out by Sultan Agung prohibiting the people to trade in foreign countries. In the XIX century, that’s econdition is change, Mangkunegara IV restore the entrepreneurial tradition through various strategies. In addition, to restoring the entrepreneurial tradition of Javanese society, Mangkunegara IV also broke the old tradition of kepriyayinan (Javanese aristocrate) to want to do business, not just live in pleasure as breeds nobility or gentry class. Therefore, reviewing to the business strategy of Mangkunegaran IV becomes important, as part of the history of economic development Javanese community. By using the historical method and a multidimensional approach, through a variety of primary sources such as Mangkunegara IV literature, the study found that the Mangkunegaran IV’s business strategy conducted by building a centers of sugar cane farm and modernization of sugar factories on a large scale, so as to obtain additional revenue for the Mangkunegaran IV family. The successfull of his business, demonstrates to the Javanese nobility that he was a king who had a strong entrepreneurial spirit.***Sejarah perkembangan ekonomi masyarakat Jawa mengalami dinamika yang sangat unik. Pada abad XV dan XVI, tradisi berdagang telah dilakukan oeh masyarakat Jawa di sepanjang pantai utara Jawa. Akan tetapi tradisi tersebut semakin meredup seiring adanya strategi sentralisasi ekonomi yang dilakukan oleh Sultan Agung yang melarang rakyatnya berdagang ke manca negara. Pada abad XIX, Mangkunegara IV mengembalikan tradisi wirausahawan tersebut melalui berbagai strategi. Selain itu, Mangkunegara IV juga mendobrak tradisi “kolot kepriyayinan” Jawa agar mau melakukan bisnis, bukan hanya hidup dalam kesenangan sebagai trah bangsawan. Karena itu, mengkaji strategi bisnis keluarga Mangkunegaran IV menjadi penting, sebagai bagian dari sejarah perkembangan ekonomi masyarakat Jawa. Dengan metode penelitian sejarah dan pendekatan multidimensional, melalui berbagai sumber primer seperti karya-karya sastra Mangkunegara IV, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa strategi bisnis keluarga Mangkunegaran IV dilakukan dengan membangun pusat-pusat perkebunan tebu dan modernisasi pabrik gula secara besar-besaran, sehingga memperoleh pendapatan tambahan bagi praja. Kesuksesan bisnis ini menunjukkan kepada para bangsawan Jawa bahwa dia adalah seorang raja yang memiliki jiwa entrepreneurship yang kuat.

Wedhatama, which was published in 1680 at the Surakarta Palace, is still popular today because it contains the concept of tri ugering ngaurip (three philosophies of life), namely arta, (about financial independence), wirya (about honor), and tri winasis (about how to gain intelligence). This study aims to critically examine how Wedhatama, a classic Javanese literary book by King Mangkunegara IV of the Surakarta Palace, contains philosophical values of life and how Javanese culture in the palace can become an interesting literary tourism object. The problem that will be answered in this paper is, "Are Wedhatama and the Mangkunegaran Palace of Surakarta worthy of being literary tourism destinations in Indonesia and even the world? This study will answer how the response of "Pura Mangkunegaran" regarding this matter. In-depth interviews with palace relatives, namely RM Darajadi Gandadipraja about Wedhatama and interviews with tourists who came to ensure that Wedhatama, the Mangkunegaran Palace, and their culture are very interesting to visit. It can be concluded that Wedhatama, the Mangkunegaran Surakarta palace, the tomb of King Mangkunegara IV, and their relics, are worthy of being literary tourism destinations, both for the Indonesian public and the world.

“…Therefore, in order to attain a deep understanding of this union, a formula known as sembah catur or four kinds of homage is described as a way of gaining the grace of God. Furthermore, the efforts to discover the meanings implied in Gambuh also lead to the argument that the four kinds of homage may serve as a warning and moral education that have significant values for someone to draw closer to God (Sulistyo, 2015). These previous researches are delimited to the pragmatic analysis suggesting that the dominant implicatures in Gambuh are the four types of homage.…”

The Wedhatama, a Javanese literary work by the King Mangkunegara IV contains philosophical teachings which are quite influential in ethical life. This paper aims at discovering the hidden meaning of the teachings which reveal an esoteric knowledge of worshipping in terms of its semantic point of view. This meaning is known through analytic and synthetic propositions in Gambuh canto associated with 4 different types of worship. Thus, the qualitative paradigm is used in which the data were obtained through library research. In this study, the synthetic proposition shows the breadth of the poet’s signifying esoteric intention that is about Javanese identity of prayer. It is revealed that the four types of worship –sembah raga, cipta, jiwa, and rasa –are said to coincide with what are usually referred to in Muslim Sufism as syariat.
