Lecturers can use many strategies to improve speaking ability. Speaking abilities include making questions, providing explanations, and also being able to provide answers. This study aimed to determine how debate techniques can improve students' speaking ability to make questions, give explanations, and give responses. The current study applied the classroom action research method and consisted of 3 cycles. Two batches of English Education College Students of 2019/2020 at Universitas Potensi Utama, totaling 60 students, were involved as the study subjects. An observation checklist and field notes were used to collect the data. The researchers observed students' activity in the classroom by using an observation checklist and fieldnotes. The researchers summarized the problem during the debating process. Based on the research findings, the debate technique applied by the research subjects reflects the improvement in the students' speaking ability. Based on the observations' results, it can be seen that the students' speaking ability in making questions and providing explanations and answers improved. The students' activities in the class when arguing in the first cycle were 42.83%, 59.17% in the second cycle, and 85.17% in the final one. It shows that the debate technique has improved the students' speaking ability to make questions and provide explanations.

One of language skills is speaking. Thus, it needs to be improved through appropriate teaching technique such as Debate; using British Parliamentary System. The population of this study consisted of all students who finished Speaking II and IV courses in the Academic Year of 2014-2015. Seventy-five students were chosen as the sample of this study; 32 students were in the control class and 43 students in were in the experimental class. Then, tests were used in collecting the data. The data were then analyzed by using t-test. The result showed that the students of English Study Program of FKIP USM who were taught speaking skill by using Debate with British Parliamentary System received higher score than those who were taught without implementing Debate British Parliamentary System. Based on the findings, the writers recommend that the lecturers can use Debate technique with British Parliamentary System in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill.

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using debate to enhance secondary students' oral presentation skills of a group of 24 secondary students from a Cairo language school. The quasi-experimental design, called the one experimental group design, was employed in the present study. A pre-post oral presentation assessment rubric was employed to assess the EFL oral presentation skills of the experimental group before and after the treatment. The results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the students on the prepost application of the oral presentation observation checklist favoring the post application. This proved that using debate developed participants' oral presentation skills. Debate can be engaging and interesting to all students, at the same time, be used as a medium to help students develop a wealth of higher order thinking and oral presentation and communication skills. Learning to debate may be one of the most important skills that today's students will need for the future.
