The impacts of agroforestry on agricultural productivity, ecosystem services, and human well‐being in low‐and middle‐income countries: An evidence and gap map

Abstract: This EGM includes studies that evaluate the effects of agroforestry practices and interventions on agricultural productivity, ecosystem services, and human well-being.A total of 20,271 studies were identified. Only 396 of these met the inclusion criteria to be retained for the EGM. Of these studies, 344 examined the effects of agroforestry practices only, 40 examined the effects of agroforestry interventions, and 12 were systematic reviews (SRs). The studies spanned the period from 2000 to mid-2017, with India… Show more

“…We relied upon a recently published evidence and gap map (Miller et al., 2020), which systematically assessed the available literature on impacts of agroforestry on agricultural productivity, ecosystem services, and human well‐being. We used their data extraction record (sup‐0001) and filtered the results for the practice type “Trees integrated with plantation crops” AND “Tropical” OR "Multiple" ecoregions to match the scope of our paper.…”

“…We expect to perform several analyses based on the data collected and to summarize results visually and in various written forms to effectively communicate with intended audiences. A final report will present the map as a detailed data set with figures of descriptive statistics derived from the data set, as in [64]. We intend to publish our systematic map in Environmental Evidence and upload the dataset online as an open-access, interactive site, as in [41].…”

“…• We will create a second tabular visualization reflecting agroforestry interventions on the intervention axis and outcomes of the interventions on the outcome axis. • We will also show the distribution of studies for each country on a geographic map, as in [40,50,64]. • We will provide descriptive statistics on geographical distribution of study location by country and world region, the type of studies, and quality of the SRs.…”

“…Recently, agroforestry and its suite of associated practices has increased in policy prominence (see, for example, Buttoud et al 2013), and its promotion is one of the central pillars of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) investments globally, targeted to reach US$ 14.7 billion by 2021 (Maillard & Cheung, 2016). Despite this substantial interest and investment, little work has been undertaken to rigorously assess the longer-term impacts of agroforestry extension programs and integrated agroforestry systems (Miller et al 2018).…”
