The Impact of Sedentary Behavior and Self-Rated Health on Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer among South Korean Elderly Persons Using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2014–2018 Data

Abstract: Cardiovascular disease and cancer have increased the risk of mortality and morbidity in elderly persons worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of sedentary behavior and self-rated health with cardiovascular disease or cancer in elderly people. The data of 6785 elderly persons aged above 65 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014–2018 were examined. Binary logistic regression analyses assessed the association of sedentary behavior, self-rated healt… Show more

“…One study including 3319 old patients free of CVD (mean age = 68.9 years in 2012 and 2013) showed that moderate to vigorous physical activity was associated with lower incidence of CVD 23 . Another cohort study in 2014 and 2018 including 6785 elderly persons in South Korea showed that prolonged sedentary behavior is related to cardiovascular diseases and cancers 24 . A meta‐analysis containing 24 studies showed that greater sedentary time was related to an increased risk of all‐cause mortality in adults over 60 years of age, which is based on high exposure to sedentary time in the elderly 25 .…”

“…Therefore, systematic exercises for ensuring core stability are paramount for preventing a deterioration in trunk muscle function and low-back pain. However, previous studies on sedentary lifestyles have mostly focused on the physiological effects, including cardiovascular and metabolic effects, of lacking physical activities [24][25][26][27]. Moreover, few studies have applied systematic trunk exercise interventions for alleviating deteriorations in trunk muscle functions due to a sedentary lifestyle, with a concomitant assessment of the mechanical and neuromuscular properties of trunk muscles and the isokinetic muscle functions of the lumbar spine.…”
