The Impact of Operating Room Layout on Circulating Nurse’s Work Patterns and Flow Disruptions: A Behavioral Mapping Study

Abstract: The similarity of the movement and flow disruption patterns, despite variations in OR layout, highlighted the adjacencies required between major zones that CNs regularly visit. These optimum adjacencies should be considered while designing ORs such that they are more efficient and safer.

“…The challenges imposed by the physical environment can affect the safety of clients and the health staff. The higher the number of tasks performed by nurses in different hospital wards, the greater the chance that the workflow (10) will be interrupted due to the waiting time for materials and equipment.…”

“…There should also be sufficient space available in the setup if large-sized equipment is used during surgery [14]. 4 Planning of pathways The pathways to supply stocks, workstations and the sterile area should be as short as possible to minimize the travel path of the circulator during surgery [61].…”
