The Impact of Future Time Perspective and Personality on the Sustainable Behaviours of Seniors

Abstract: This study examined a national sample of American seniors to determine the influence of future time perspective (FTP) and personality traits on their sustainable behaviours. Based on a sample of 520 seniors, the study found a significant positive relationship between FTP and sustainable behaviours. FTP fully mediates the impact of the conscientiousness personality trait on sustainable behaviours and partially mediates the impact of the openness and agreeableness personality traits on seniors' sustainable behav… Show more

“…The difference in the behaviour of generations results in exhibiting different environmental behaviour, especially during the current scenario, Baby Boomers appear to be more conservative and concerned about the quality of life and environment (Severo et al 2020 ). This finding is consistent with Eastman et al’s ( 2020 ) study concluding that future concerns among the seniors result in sustainable behaviours. In the context of religious association, all religions have an equal perception towards the threats of COVID-19 and encourage their followers to protect their surrounding environment.…”

“…As shown in Appendix , the survey items were adapted from current scales and measured on a 5‐point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” The independent variables of social‐adjustive and value‐expressive attitudes were measured with Wilcox et al (2009) scale. To measure ecologically conscious consumer behavior/socially responsible consumer behavior, the shorter version of the ecologically conscious consumer behavior scale by Roberts (1996a) per Eastman et al (2019), and the socially responsible consumer behavior scale developed by Roberts (1996b) were utilized for the dependent variables. Lynn and Harris's (1997) unidimensional scale was used to measure the mediating variable of the Desire for Unique Consumer Products.…”

“…Conversely, individuals who focus on the future (i.e., future temporal focus) will take future consequences into account (e.g., Levasseur et al, 2020;Shipp et al, 2009). Prior research found that individuals who anticipate future consequences refrain from negative behavior in favor of positive work-related behaviors and attitudes (e.g., altruism, conscientiousness, courtesy, long-term planning, and OCB; Foo, Uy & Baron, 2009;Levasseur et al, 2020;Shipp et al, 2009;Strobel, Tumasjan, Spörrle & Welpe, 2013) as well as positive nonwork-related behaviors and attitudes (e.g., increased safety skills and fewer traffic violations; increased sustainable behavior; ; Eastman, Modi & Gordon-Wilson, 2019;Tekeş,Özdemir &Özkanc, 2020). Furthermore, Baltes, Wynne, Sirabian, Krenn, and De Lange (2014) proposed that future time perspective triggers a goal orientation with promotion focus.…”
