This research draws on protection motivation theory, temporal construal theory, and self‐determination theory to understand consumption practices during a pandemic crisis by looking at the narratives of British consumers during the COVID‐19 crisis. A two‐stage design is adopted: the first stage adopts an exploratory strategy to identify consumption‐related themes using netnography, while the second stage explores these themes further to gain a deeper insight through 13 semi‐structured interviews. Three themes emerge relating to different aspects of consumption practices. These themes are found to link to the self‐control research area and include consumers' self‐control changing their shopping behaviour, having less self‐control over unhealthy snack consumption and having less self‐control concerning alcohol. These lead to changes in other consumption practices, including store format and type of shopping. Different initiatives are discussed to help retailers retain their new lockdown customers to help manufacturers provide healthier options and to help weight management businesses and the National Health Service reduce unhealthy consumption habits.

This research examines the impact of the Big Five personality traits and social media usage on price consciousness and determines if this impact is influenced by generational cohort by comparing 215 millennials with 300 baby boomers. The survey research with a national panel of U.S. consumers utilizes established scales along with asking about hours per week spent on social media. While the study found no generational differences in price consciousness, it did find differences in the Big Five personality traits as millennials are more open, but baby boomers are more conscientious, agreeable, and neurotic. The results suggest for millennials, extroverts are more price conscious and open individuals are less price conscious. The amount of social media usage does impact the level of price consciousness with those spending more time on social media being more price conscious. When comparing social media usage by cohort, there is no significant difference in terms of time spent on Facebook, but there are significant differences in time spent on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat as millennials use all three of these sites more. This study examines the likelihood of cheating when consumers are offered with the option of using postponed payment plans after purchasing hedonic goods. It addresses how the nature of the good combined with payment timing affects its perceived psychological ownership, which in turn influences consumers’ cheating behavior. Three experimental studies indicate that when consumers mentally represent a hedonic (vs. utilitarian) good, they are more likely to cheat. This effect is greater with a postponed payment than with an immediate one. Findings also show that perceived psychological ownership is lower for hedonic goods and this explains different levels of cheating behavior. The paper offers managerial guidance on how to increase perceived psychological ownership for hedonic goods, with the goal of reducing cheating behavior.
