The impact of breeding on fruit production in warm climates of Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT-Brazil is a very large country with a diverse climate. This fact allows a diversity of plants to grow ranging from tropical rainforest in the Amazon, passing through Atlantic Forest along the coast, the cerrados (Brazilian savannah) in the Central West region, and semi-arid area in the Northeast. Latitude ranges from 5° N to 33° S, with most of this territory in the tropical region. There are enough reasons to plant breeders devoting great amount of their effort to improve plants suitable for warm cli… Show more

“…Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is an important crop for Brazil (POMMER; BARBOSA, 2009) which is the world's largest producer of fresh fruits (FAO, 2011), particularly in the northeast region. The yellow passion fruit is a crop that is considered to be sensitive to salinity; that is, it does not tolerate an electrical conductivity of saturated soil extract higher than 1.3 dS m −1 (AYERS; WESTCOT, 1994).…”

“…The planting of table grapes in tropical areas has been expanding due to bud dormancy breaking techniques and crop management adequacy depending on the region and climate in which the crop is to be cultivated (Pommer & Barbosa, ). However, in the areas studied, climate has been a limiting factor, since it favours the development of diseases that can cause damage and loss in the vineyards, where the predominant disease is downy mildew, caused by Plasmopara viticola (Berk & Curt.…”
