“…Bioassays with prokaryotes enable the detection of agents that induce gene mutation and primary DNA damages. On the other hand, analyses with eukaryotes enable the detection of a greater damage extent, varying from gene mutations to chromosome damages and aneuploidies (Houk, 1992;Leme & Marin-Morales, 2009). Using both pro-and eukaryotic test system make the results both strengthen and correlate to verify if the chemical(s) has/have really any bad effects on the genes.…”

“…Metabolization may provide even more toxic characteristics to the analyzed samples, probably due to the high activity of metabolites generated by available substances, which led, in some cases the absence of genotoxiciy. Besides, the high toxicity presented by these samples might point out to a possible contamination by biologically active substances, such as antibiotics and disinfectants (Saxena, 1984;Houk, 1992;Vargas et al, 1993;Giuliani et al, 1996;White et al, 1996). These substances are widely used at the HCPA, and their ultimate destination is the effluents.…”

“…Of all the tester strains, those containing the hisD3052 allele (especially strains TA1538 and TA98) have been shown to be the most useful in mutagenesis screening programs (15) and have been used more than any of the other strains for evaluating complex mixtures (2,11). Thus, nearly all of our initial work has focused on the analysis of mutations that revert this allele.…”

“…Although other genotoxicity tests in addition to the Salmonella assay have been used to evaluate complex mixtures (6,7), the vast majority of the literature on the genotoxicity of complex mixtures has been generated using the Salmonella assay (2,6,7,11,12). Recent developments in genome analysis now provide the means by which mutations can be examined at the molecular level (13).…”
