The future of Japanese quail for research and production

Abstract: HAL is a multidisciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labora… Show more

“…In addition, far too little attention has been paid to the determination of meat quality traits of adult or spent quails at the end of their productive life (Santhi and Kalaikannan, 2017). In fact, even if research shows that quail meat production is economically most effective when performed at the age of 35 days, there may also be markets for larger quail (300 g) to be sold as broiler or processed, and for older and slower growing quails (Minvielle, 2004). On the other hand, the old breeding birds are slaughtered and sold on commercial market without any distinction being made on age (Shanaway, 1994).…”

“…In a few investigations feed conversion ratio, carcass traits and growth curves were studied (Pym et al, 1998;Narinc et al, 2010). In the studies performed on Japanese quail, lines with (Minvielle, 2004). However, certain correlated traits were improved for meat production or egg yield in dam and sire lines, and modern poultry breeding techniques for commercial use of crossbred hybrids of these lines have not been used.…”

“…However, certain correlated traits were improved for meat production or egg yield in dam and sire lines, and modern poultry breeding techniques for commercial use of crossbred hybrids of these lines have not been used. Therefore, certain disadvantages such as reduced fertile egg production and feed conversion ratio, and deteriorated egg quality occurred in future generations due to the rapid increase in live-weight and egg yield (Minvielle, 2004). In a successful breeding study, genetic parameters of the selected traits should be correctly estimated and suitable breeding programmes should be planned.…”

“…There is no increasingly trend for research activity on Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) as a biological model (Minvielle, 2004) and little information is available on the nutritional requirements of modern quails, especially on digestible amino acid requirements. Some reports were recently published on the metabolizable energy:crude protein (ME:CP) ratio in growing (Ghazaghi et al, 2012;Siyadati et al, 2011) and adult quails (Tarasewicz et al, 2006).…”
