One hundred eighty young adults completed measures of family cohesion and adaptability, communication expressiveness and clarity, and problem solving. The results of polynomial regression trend analyses yielded a linear relationship between cohesion and communication expressiveness, clarity, and problem solving whether cohesion was defined linearly as emotional bonding or curvilinearly as family togetherness. There also was a linear relationship between adaptability, defined linearly as flexibility to master family life cycle stage transitions and these facets of family communication. However, the relationship for communication clarity was curvilinear when adaptability was defined in a curvilinear way as the degree of power, control, and organization in the home. Overall, these results tend not to support Olson's circumplex model of couples and family systems.In sum, according to the view of these adolescents, when cohesion is defined as emotional bonding (i.e., as a linear concept) and adaptability is defined as flexibility over time (i.e., also as a linear concept), then both cohesion and adaptability are related in a linear fashion with communication expressiveness, communication clarity, and problem solving. Also, the relationship between cohesion and these various aspects of communication is much stronger than the relationship between adaptability and each of them; that is, a much larger percentage of variance in communication expressiveness, communication clarity, and problem solving is accounted for by cohesion than by adaptability. These results for the linear definitions of cohesion and adaptability do not support Olson's curvilinear hypothesis. Results for Curvilinear Definitions of Cohesion and AdaptabilityCohesion. The results for the total sample for Cohesion C (i.e., family togetherness) and Adaptability C (i.e., the amount of control and organization in the home), which represent curvilinear definitions of cohesion and adaptability, the interaction of Cohesion C and Adaptability C, gender and gender interaction with Cohesion C and Adaptability C regressed first on communication expressiveness, next on communication clarity, and then on problem solving are presented in Table 2.

ResumoA presença de uma relação saudável da criança com seus pais é um fator importante na prevenção de psicopatologias como a depressão. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar as propriedades psicométricas do Familiograma, associando os seus resultados de afetividade e conflito familiar com a intensidade da sintomatologia depressiva em crianças e adolescentes. Participaram do estudo 234 estudantes (133 do sexo feminino, 56,8%) com idades entre oito a 14 anos (Média=11,19, DP=1,76 AbstractThe presence of a healthy relation between a child and his/her parents is an important factor for the prevention of psychopathologies as depression. The objective of this research was to investigate the psychometrics properties of the Familiogram, and the association of the results of affectivity and family conflict with the intensity of depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. Two hundred thirty four students participated of the study (133 female, 56.8%) and their ages ranged from 8 to 14 years old A família inclui, em um sentido mais básico, parentes com ligações sanguíneas ou pessoas ligadas por casamento, união estável ou adoção, em que os membros cooperam economicamente, cuidam das crianças ou consideram sua identidade como sendo intimamente conectada (Bonomi, Boudreau, Fishman, Meenan, & Revicki, 2005;Schneewind, 1999). Em um sentido mais amplo, este grupo incorpora a conexão com os indivíduos dentro de sua comunidade histórica, geográfica e sócio-cultural. Apesar de existir uma pluralidade na sua definição, é possível extrair do sistema familiar algumas caracterís-ticas que o diferem de outros (veja maiores detalhes em Schneewind, 1999). O primeiro é a delimitação do espaço físico, no qual duas ou mais pessoas convivem no mesmo ambiente com regras explícitas e implícitas. Esta demarcação do espaço físico implica uma privacidade, na qual a troca comportamental é possível. Outra característica é a sua duração temporal, visto que o sentido de família está intimamente ligado a uma estabilidade ao longo do tempo. Finalmente, é necessária a presença de uma intimidade física e emocional no processo de relacionamento interpessoal.O sistema familiar é reconhecido por vários teóricos como sendo de fundamental importância para a socialização primária e para a formação da identidade da criança. Searching for effective interventions for foster children under stress: a meta‐analysis

Foster children experience a lot of stress because of their life histories and changes in their family circumstances, such as foster care placement. It is important that foster parents recognize the early signs of stress in foster children and learn how to act in a non‐threatening and understanding manner. Family‐based interventions may help in this. In this paper, we report on a meta‐analysis of studies (n= 19) of the effectiveness of such interventions. All studies used a pre‐test/post‐test design. Both problem behaviour in foster children and the parenting skills of foster parents improved by 30%; however, none of the interventions were specifically intended to help young children (<4 years) to cope with stress. The importance of interventions for young foster children is discussed, as well as the necessary elements these interventions should include.
