One of the most widely used measures for evaluating love is the Triangular Love Scale (TLS) by Sternberg (1986) based on his Triarchic theory according to which, love is comprised of three reasonably independent components (intimacy, passion and commitment). However, different investigations contradict this idea. The purpose of the present investigation is to verify whether the structure of love is triarchic, with three independent factors, or monarchical-hierarchical, with a first level where the three components of love would be located, and a second higher level where they would be grouped together in a general factor of love. In order to do this, in addition to the use of the TLS scale, another equivalent called Quality Partner Relationship Scale (QPRS) was developed to test the stability of the results found, and to propose a measure of love based on the Sternberg components, but simpler and without problems of overlap between items. To test this question, we used a sample of 610 people matched by sex, age and social class, all of whom were partnered at the time of the evaluation. Confirmatory Factor Analyses were used to test the research objective, something that had not been done so far, and it was found that the structure that best fitted the data was monarchical-hierarchical in the case of the TLS as well as in the one of the QPRS. We can then state that love is structured around a general factor in which the three components are grouped: Intimacy, passion and commitment.

RESUMOEsta pesquisa teve por objetivo adaptar para o contexto brasileiro a Escala do Nível de Satisfação com o Relacionamento Amoroso (ENSRA, Rusbult, Martz, & Agnew, 1998). No primeiro estudo (N=269), buscaram-se evidências de validade baseadas na estrutura unifatorial do instrumento e analisaram-se as propriedades dos itens de acordo com a Teoria de Resposta ao Item. No segundo estudo (N=1.498), propôs-se uma versão revisada da escala (ENSRA-R), incluindo-se novos itens com parâmetros mais elevados de dificuldade. Análises fatoriais exploratórias e confirmatórias indicaram uma estrutura unifatorial também para ENSRA-R. Conforme esperado teoricamente, ENSRA e ENSRA-R correlacionaram-se positivamente com outra medida de satisfação com o relacionamento e com amor romântico, e negativamente com intenção de terminar o relacionamento. Ambas as versões do instrumento apresentam satisfatórias evidências de validade e adequados índices de precisão, contudo, a ENSRA-R mostrou-se mais informativa, cobrindo uma maior porção do traço latente, comparada à ENSRA.Palavras-chave: satisfação com o relacionamento amoroso; adaptação de escala; amor. ABSTRACT -A Measure of Satisfaction in the Romantic RelationshipThis study aimed to adapt the Investment Model of Commitment Processes Scale (Escala do Nível de Satisfação com o Relacionamento Amoroso -ENSRA -Rusbult, Martz, & Agnew, 1988) to the Brazilian context. In the first study (N=269), we sought evidence of validity based on the unifactorial structure of the instrument and analyzed the properties of the items according to the item response theory. In the second study (N=1498), a revised version of the scale (ENSRA-R) was proposed, including new items with higher difficulty parameters. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicated a single-factor structure for both the ENSRA and ENSRA-R. As theoretically expected the ENSRA and ENSRA-R correlated positively with another instrument that assesses relationship satisfaction and with romantic love, and negatively with the intention to break-up. Both versions of the instrument provide satisfactory evidence of validity and adequate accuracy, however, the ENSRA-R was more informative, covering a larger portion of the latent trait compared to the ENSRA.

Types of love as a function of satisfaction and age

Research studies on love have focused on the study of typologies, among which Sternberg's triangular theory of love and the typology of Hendrick and Hendrick deriving from that of Sternberg have been the most common and empirically verified. Love types have been linked to all types of sociodemographic and psychological variables. However, these studies possess shortcomings: When the data are analyzed according to age, only a few ranges are studied; with respect to other variables such as satisfaction, typically only two levels are studied, and no continuous study is conducted. This study attempts to overcome these limitations. It analyzes types of love according to the two systems noted earlier and based on two variables: age and satisfaction. For satisfaction, the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) by Diener et al. was used, and 439 subjects aged 15 to 89 years participated in the study. The results show that both of the variables-age and satisfaction-explain that love types occur in varying degrees; however, satisfaction is more predictive than is age.Possibilities for future research are discussed.
