Las bodegas cooperativas surgieron con un doble objetivo: la elaboración en común del vino, para reducir los costes de producción y aumentar la calidad del producto; y la venta en común del vino, con una reducción de los intermediarios y una mejora de la posición de los viticultores en el proceso de comercialización. Ambos objetivos tenían que suponer una mayor remuneración del producto y, en consecuencia, del ingreso de los productores, que en el sector vitivinícola eran fundamentalmente pequeños agricultores familiares, enfrentados a un contexto de caída tendencial de los precios del vino. En este artículo realizamos una primera aproximación al papel de las bodegas cooperativas en la comercialización del vino en España durante el siglo XX, destacando especialmente sus dificultades para adaptarse a los cambios en las pautas de consumo a partir de los años 70.

The colonization of Mallorca gave rise to a late-feudal agrarian society that evolved towards capitalism based on large estates owned by noblemen who hired large numbers of wage labourers from among smallholders living in agro-towns, the dispossessed remnants of a formerly wealthier peasantry. These well-off peasants originated from when the colonization frontier was open in the 13th and 14th centuries, but had been defeated when three peasant-plebeian revolts were crushed. Afterwards, Mallorca followed a latifundist transition towards agrarian capitalism similar to southern Italy or Spain, in sharp contrast with the middle-peasant paths seen in Catalonia or Valencia. The land rent rose, while agricultural wages fell from 1659 to 1800. Peasant families could not survive, and had to supplement wages with the products of their own plots. This set a socio-agroecological limit to growth in this agrarian class structure. The agrarian crisis at the end of the 19th century bankrupted the Mallorcan nobility. Bankers bought much of the land and sold it on as small allotments. This expanded the intensive cropping formerly limited to agro-town belts, giving rise to a new "peasantization". Despite their subordination, Mallorcan peasants had survived and created complex agroecological landscapes endowed with a rich biocultural heritage.

The cooperative movement developed quite early in Catalonia, and more than eighty winemaking cooperatives were in operation in the 1930s, accounting for 70 per cent of the Spanish total (Planas 2016). Nevertheless they were far fewer in number than in the Midi, where 340 wine cooperatives were founded from 1919 to 1939 (Lachiver 1988, p. 498).…”

In the early twentieth century, governments not only used trade policy to protect domestic agricultural markets, but they also introduced regulations affecting quality, quantity and prices. In this article I assess the differences in the state intervention in wine markets in two major wine-producing countries, France and Spain, and try to explain the reasons for them. To do so, I examine the specific features of their markets and productive systems, the winegrowers' collective action, and the political framework in each country. I argue that the differences are related to a) the strength and cohesion of the winegrowers' lobby; b) the winegrowers' relationship with political parties; and c) the state's ability to respond to their demands.Key words: agricultural policy, wine market, early twentieth century, France, Spain JEL classification: N43, N44, N53, N54, Q18 RESUMENA comienzos del siglo XX, los gobiernos no sólo utilizaban la política comercial para proteger los mercados agrícolas nacionales, sino que también introdujeron regulaciones sobre la calidad, la cantidad y los precios de los productos. En este artículo trato de evaluar las diferencias en la intervención del Estado en los mercados vinícolas en dos de los principales países productores de vino, Francia y España, y las razones de las mismas.
