The Effects of Starvation and Refeeding on Oxidative Stress Parameters (MDA, SOD, GPx), Lipid Profile, Thyroid Hormones and Thyroid Histopathology in Male Wistar Rats

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of starvation and re-feeding on oxidative stress markers, lipid profile, thyroid hormones, and changes in thyroid tissue and in male Wistar rats.Method: Fifty-six male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups. After 3 months of feeding animals with specific diet, the first group was used without fasting (day zero). Other rats were exposed to fasting for 14 days. The second group was considered as a group after fasting (day 14). In groups 3 to 6, replenishment… Show more

“…Vitamin C or E treatment alone was reported to be effective in reducing the negative effects of stress [22][23][24]. Vitamin C functions to maintain the fat-soluble Vitamin E. In particular, Vitamin C also plays a role in activating Vitamin E when it loses its antioxidant capacity by turning into tocopherol.…”

“…Serum testosterone and cortisol were estimated using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method (My-Bio-Source ® , San Diego, CA, USA) [20]. The remaining serum was used to measure serum SOD, MDA, CAT, and GPx levels [21,22].…”

“…Refeeding, critical to the sustained recovery of patients with anorexia nervosa, is another potential contributor to the upregulated immune system presumed in this condition. Although unstudied in eating disorders, oxidative stress is increased in animal models of starvation when undergoing refeeding and may potentially be related to increased adiposity (and associated adipokine secretion) with weight gain [126]. Increased central adiposity has indeed been found in anorexia nervosa with weight restoration [127], and this regional adiposity is very metabolically active [128].…”

“…In our work, the ROS burst caused by Ang II was alleviated by HSYA. The intracellular ROS accumulation will lead to the disruption of redox system, for example, the activity of MDA and SOD ( 33 , 34 ). In this study, the content of MDA and the activity of SOD were dysregualted by Ang II, however, the treatment of HSYA recovered their balance.…”
