“…As Reg gene expression was observed in the phase of transient β cell proliferation: for example, in pancreatic islets of diabetic BB/Wor//Tky rats during the remission phase of diabetes [32], in islets of nonobese diabetic mice during active diabetogenesis [33] and pancreatic ductal cells, which are thought to be progenitor cells of β cells, during differentiation and proliferation in a mouse model of autoimmune diabetes [34, 35], and inflammation and cell death in and/or around islets was involved in these cases, we used inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 β , TNF- α , and IFN- γ [36], as well as pancreatic β cell toxic agents, such as palmitate [37, 38], H 2 O 2 [39, 40], SNAP [41, 42], and STZ [43, 44]. Other factors, which were reported to upregulate Reg gene expression in β cells, such as IL-6 [13, 31], glucocorticoid [13, 31], IL-22 [6, 45], IFN- β [35], PDGF [46], and amino acids [46], were tested.…”

“…In one study, oral carvacrol was daily prescribed in rats, and its effect on cell damage induced by H 2 O 2 in isolet pancreas cells was studied. Carvacrol ameliorates the cell viability ratio and protects against lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation induced by H 2 O 2 (Dagli Gul et al ., ). Carvacrol with concentrations of 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 mg/L was added in cultured human blood cells, and TAC and total oxidative stress (TOS) were assessed to determine its antioxidant effect.…”

“…In this study, it was shown that the cell viability and cell injury induced by H 2 O 2 was reduced with carvacrol pretreatment. However, a dose of 20 mg/kg/day of carvacrol was more effective than its higher doses (Dagli Gul et al ., ). The antioxidant effect of carvacrol was also observed in another study (Giannenas et al ., ).…”

“…Carvacrol is chemically 2‐methyl‐5‐[1‐methylethyl] phenol, a monoterpenoid essential oil obtained from plant Oreganum vulgarae , oil of Thyme , practiced as a traditional and household medicine in various parts of the world. Studies report that it is able to maintain the levels of GSH, thus strengthening the free radical scavenging arsenal during oxidative stress (Dagli Gul et al , ). Carvacrol was recently proved to mitigate pancreatic injury induced by multiple low doses of cerulein by circumventing the oxidative stress and improvement of pancreatic exocrine function (amylase and lipase levels).…”
