The Effects ofMomordica balsaminaMethanolic Extract on Kidney Function in STZ-Induced Diabetic Rats: Effects on Selected Metabolic Markers

Abstract: Background Studies suggest that Momordica balsamina (intshungu) possesses hypoglycaemic effects. The effects of Momordica balsamina on diabetic complications such as DN, however, have not been established. Accordingly, this study seeks to investigate the effects of M. balsamina on kidney function in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Methods Methanolic extracts (ME) of M. balsamina's leaves were used in this study. Short-term effects of M. balsamina methanolic extract on kidney function and MAP were studied in STZ-ind… Show more

“…The short-term effects of OA were monitored for haematological parameters in separate groups of untreated and treated STZ-induced diabetic male Sprague-Dawley rats for 5 weeks using a previously validated standard protocol that has been reported from our laboratories [27]. Briefly, OA (80 mg/kg p.o) was administered twice every third day at 09:00 and 15:00 in separate groups of rats by means of a bulbed steel tube.…”

“…Hyperglycemiainduced oxidative stress in diabetes is a major cause for the development of diabetic complication such as diabetes nephropathy [3]. This pathway is mainly activated by sustained hyperglycemia which causes the intra-renal haemodynamic's changes through glycosylation of intrarenal proteins that induce hyperfiltration and glomerular dysfunction [4]. Chemotherapy remains the kernel of diabetes management, but most individuals with chronic diabetes condition in developing countries rely on phytotherapy which involve traditional medicines alone or synergistically with orthodox drugs.…”

“…Hyperglycemia is a metabolic disorder of the endocrine system characterized by abnormal glucose metabolism which is demonstrated by high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease due to the disturbances of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism resulting from insulin resistant and β -cell dysfunction [ 1 – 3 ]. Dyslipidemia is a very frequent metabolic disorder which is characterized by an increase of the rates of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and reduction of the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) [ 4 – 6 ]. It is known that hypercholesterolemia contributes to development of the atherosclerosis and subsequent of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and renal failure [ 3 , 6 ].…”
