The effectiveness of a computer‐assisted math learning program

Abstract: Computer‐assisted instruction (CAI) programs are considered as a way to improve learning outcomes of students. However, little is known on the schools who implement such programs as well as on the effectiveness of similar information and communication technology programs. We provide a literature review that pays special attention to the existing causal evidence of computer‐assisted programs on learning outcomes. The paper relies on a rich data set consisting of (i) pupil‐level information on the use of a Dutch… Show more

“…Previous research stated that the use of ICT in science learning can support abstract reasoning abilities (Chang, Chen, Lin, & Sung, 2008), in mathematics learning, can increase learning participation and higher test results (De Witte, Haelermans, & Rogge, 2015). Meanwhile, the CAI model used in learning can reduce anxiety in bibliography teaching (Van Scoyoc, 2003), providing significant benefits to literacy skills, especially in phonological awareness (Macaruso & Walker, 2008), can develop early literacy skills (Macaruso & Rodman, 2011), effective in learning autism students (Pennington, 2010), increasing critical-thinking skills especially in problem-solving skills, at least in students with better exposure to mathematics, science, and techniques beforehand (Renshaw, Taylor, & Reynolds, 1998).…”

“…OECD (2016) suggested that an excellent cognitive teaching strategy should at least (1) expect students to explain their thinking on complex problems; (2) encourage students to solve problems in more than one way; (3) require students to provide written explanations of how they the Sergis et al, 2019;Shaikh & Khoja, 2012;Whitaker, 2017). One of the most familiar learning tools is a lesson plan, which comprises identity, goals, materials, learning procedures, learning sources, and assessment (Cherasaro et al, 2015;De Witte et al, 2015;Surgenor, 2010). Moreover, Kubilinskiene & Dagiene (2010) denoted that a lesson plan is a methodological and essential component in conducting a teaching and learning process.…”
