The effect of substitution of soybean meal with a mixture of rapeseed meal, white lupin grain, and pea grain on performance indicators, nutrient digestibility, and nitrogen retention in Popielno White rabbits

Abstract: Rabbits, bred under large-scale farming conditions, are fed pelleted complete feed containing extracted soybean meal (SBM), which is the protein source. In recent years, in certain areas of the world, a trend has emerged for the elimination of soybean meal from feed rations. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the substitution of extracted SBM with a mixture of extracted rapeseed meal (RSM; 5-10%), white lupin (WL) grain (4-8%), and pea grain (3-6%) on production results, as well as nutri… Show more

“…The replacement of SBM with RSM, WLS and PS had no negative effect on the growth performance of Popielno White rabbits, either (Zwolinski et al, 2017). However, the performance parameters obtained in the above study were lower than those determined in our experiment, which resulted from differences between Popielno White rabbits and Hyplus rabbits.…”

“…In our study, carcass quality parameters were comparable in all groups and typical of broiler rabbits under intensive production conditions. Also in a study by Zwolinski et al (2017), diets similar to those used in our experiment did not induce significant changes in the slaughter yield of Popielno White rabbits.…”

“…In addition, heat stress may lead to an increase in the activity of the amylase (Routman et al, 2003) and lipase (Hao et al, 2012), which could increase NFE and EE digestibility. However, the values of nutrient digestibility observed herein are lower than those reported by Ondruška et al (2010), Strychalski et al (2014) and Zwoliński et al (2017) and could be attributed to rabbit age and breed, season of the year, environmental conditions and analytical procedure. Strychalski et al (2014) also mentioned that nutrient digestibility may differ by more than 10% and is related to the animal age, health, diet and genetic line.…”

“…There are many studies analyzing the impact of replacing soya with lupin in animal diets. Many authors confirmed that lupin is a suitable protein component for use in animal feed, based on production parameters and nutrient digestibility in animals (Zraly et al 2008;Volek and Marounek 2009;Zdunczyk et al 2016;Zwolinski et al 2017). In addition to proteins, important growth-promoting factors in lupin seeds include their significant amounts of saccharides, including raffinose-series oligosaccharides (RSO).…”
