“…Thus, these three parameters presented significant correlation at the starter phase. The increase in IV was observed by several authors who used purified and soluble non-starch polysaccharide added to the diet in experiments with broilers (Jia et al, 2009), pigs (Buraczewska et al, 2007) and fishes (Amirkolaie et ns -not significant; ITT -intestinal transit time (min); IV -intestinal viscosity (Centipoise); EMC -excreta moisture content (%); AME -apparent metabolizable energy (kcal/kg); AMEn -nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (kcal/kg); CAM -coefficient of apparent metabolizability (g/g); CAMn -coefficient of nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizability (g/g); ADC -apparent digestibility coefficient: DM -dry matter (g/g) -CF -crude fat (g/g); CP -crude protein (g/g); OM -organic matter (g/g); A -ash (g/g); Ca -calcium (g/g); P -phosphorus (g/g).…”

“…However, the impact of dietary fiber on gut morphology is variable and depends on type of fiber, level of inclusion, and digestion site in the GI tract (6,7,19,32). For instance, inulin-type fructan has been shown to promote gut development, and this is suggested to be mediated by the stimulation of LAB in the pig GI tract (32).…”

“…For example, feeding pigs fermentable carbohydrates, including sugar beet pulp pectin, is reported to increase colon microbiota diversity and Lactobacillus amylovorus population (20). Diets with a high content of sugar beet pulp pectin resulted in increased numbers of lactobacilli in the small intestine and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) products in the colon of weaned piglets (6), whereas apple pectin diets did not affect pig small intestine motility but altered intestinal morphology (7). In addition, a recent study from our group showed that different levels of chicory forage inclusion increased the digestibility of uronic acids and maintained pig performance compared to a cereal-based control diet (17).…”

“…A portion of the protein is a component of the NDF matrix and is not free during digestion in the small intestine (Schulze et al, 1994). In addition, NDF and its lignin fraction in particular have a high water retention capacity and thereby increase the viscosity of the digesta, which slows mass transfer and enzymatic reactions, and hence digestion and absorption of nutrients (Buraczewska et al, 2007). Furthermore, gastric, pancreatic and biliary secretions appear to increase with NDF content of the feed (Ikegami et al, 1990), which would increase endogenous losses of protein due to sloughing of intestinal epithelium (Shah et al, 1982) in addition to digestive proteases.…”
