ResumoOs cátions lítio (Li + ), sódio (Na + ) e potássio (K + ) encontram-se em primeiro lugar no plano de seletividade para a obtenção de bentonitas monocatiônicas a partir das policatiônicas, influenciando de forma específica o comportamento reológico dos fluidos de perfuração base água. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a influência do Li + , Na + e K + na reologia de bentonitas do estado da Paraíba, Brasil, para uso em fluidos de perfuração à base de água. Os novos depósitos de bentonitas brasileiras foram comparados com base nas suas características químicas, físicas, mineralógicas, propriedades reológicas e de filtração. As amostras de bentonitas foram caracterizadas por meio da composição química através do método clássico, capacidade de troca de cátions, análise granulométrica por difração a laser, difração de raios X e análises térmicas. A reologia das dispersões foi estudada e determinadas as viscosidades aparente, viscosidade plástica e limite de escoamento com base nas normas da API e Petrobras, além dos estudos de inchamento em água e filtrado. Os resultados mostraram uma melhora significativa nas propriedades reológicas e de filtração das dispersões após a aditivação com os carbonatos de lítio e de sódio, nessa ordem, havendo presença de tixotropia nas curvas de fluxo das dispersões de argilas estudadas. Bentonite clay is used all around the world as an additive in drilling fluids. However, impurities present in this material can compromise the compatibility of the clay-fluid system. The present study aimed to analyze the effects of the purification of bentonite samples from new deposits in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, in order to make them usable in water-based drilling fluids. The samples were first purified by centrifugation, and their characteristics were determined using the following techniques: laser granulometry, X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, cation exchange capacity, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. After these determinations, the polycationic clay samples were made sodic through the addition of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) in the proportion of 125 meq/100 g of dry clay. The rheological and filtration properties (apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, and filtrate volume) were then tested. The results showed that the purification process was efficient for removing accessory minerals such as quartz, iron, and carbonates. With regard to rheological and filtration properties, the results following centrifugation showed that the material can be suitable for use in water-based drilling fluids.

Smectite clay minerals and their suspensions have long been of both great scientific and applications interest and continue to display a remarkable range of new and interesting behaviour. Recently there has been an increasing interest in the properties of mixed suspensions of such clays with nanoparticles of different size, shape and charge. This review aims to summarize the current status of research in this area focusing on phase behaviour and rheological properties. We will emphasize the rich range of data that has emerged for these systems and the challenges they present for future investigations. The review starts with a brief overview of the behaviour and current understanding of pure smectite clays and their suspensions. We then cover the work on smectite clay-inorganic nanoparticle mixed suspensions according to the shape and charge of the nanoparticles -spheres, rods and plates either positively or negatively charged. We conclude with a summary of the overarching trends that emerge from these studies and indicate where gaps in our understanding need further research for better understanding the underlying chemistry and physics.
