The Effect of Kerogen-Hydrocarbons Interaction on the PVT Properties in Liquid Rich Shale Plays

Abstract: In liquid rich shale plays, the hydrocarbons may remain associated with the parent kerogen. During catagenesis of kerogen in the geologic history, the kerogen is converted to hydrocarbons. A fraction of the generated hydrocarbons is expelled from the residual kerogen matrix, while the rest is retained within the kerogen matrix. In liquid rich shale plays, the hydrocarbons retained within the kerogen plays a key role in estimated ultimate recovery (EUR). However, the vapor-liquid equilibrium between oil and gas… Show more

“…Organic-rich shales contain a certain percentage of microporous kerogen, which exhibits high adsorption potential due to its significant internal surface area [19,35]. Furthermore, in liquid-rich shale plays, the hydrocarbons retained within the kerogen play a key role in estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) [36]. Thus, shale resource assessment methods could not ignore the adsorbed component of hydrocarbon-in-place.…”

“…The material balance method is advantageous for requiring only production data and fluid PVT properties. The existence of kerogen in shale plays that might alter the PVT properties 36 is not considered in this study. Fluid properties are determined at average reservoir pressures, that is, uniform pressure throughout the entire reservoir.…”
