The Effect of Electrophoretic Deposition Parameters on the Microstructure and Adhesion of Zein Coatings to Titanium Substrates

Abstract: Zein coatings were obtained by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on commercially pure titanium substrates in an as-received state and after various chemical treatments. The properties of the zein solution, zeta potential and conductivity, at varying pH values were investigated. It was found that the zein content and the ratio of water to ethanol of the solution used for EPD, as well as the process voltage value and time, significantly influence the morphology of coatings. The deposits obtained from the solution… Show more

“…Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is used to prepare high-quality coatings on materials ( Pishbin et al, 2014 ). Over the past few years, EPD has accelerated its application in the field of implant surface modification because of lower cost, simple process, and superior coating quality ( Maciag et al, 2021 ). Unlike anodizing, anodizing is the anodic electrochemical technique while electrophoretic and cathodic depositions are the cathodic electrochemical techniques ( Kim and Ramaswamy 2009 ).…”

“…Different zein-based coatings are being developed. In the field of orthopedics, zein is used as coating on SS, Ti, and Mg implants, and as a fixation device [140][141][142]. As discussed in Section 2.4 in case of problems associated with metallic implants (e.g., toxic ion release, corrosion, etc.)…”

“…The morphology and thickness of the coatings can be tailored and controlled by adjusting the applied voltage and deposition time. It is necessary to use a stable colloidal solution containing charged particles that move when an electric field is applied to deposit homogeneous coatings [54]. This method can also be used to apply various coatings to metallic substrates, such as ceramics, polymers, and composites [55,56].…”
