The Effect of Dentin Desensitizer on Shear Bond Strength of Conventional and Self-adhesive Resin Luting Cements After Aging

Abstract: Following tooth preparation, application of Gluma Desensitizer does not impair the bond strength of conventional resin luting cements with etch-and-rinse adhesive systems and self-adhesive cements. Based on bond strength data and failure types observed, use of Gluma Desensitizer cannot be advised before cementation with Panavia 21. SUMMARYThis study tested the impact of Gluma Desensitizer on the shear bond strength (SBS) of two conventional (RelyX ARC, Panavia 21) and two self-adhesive (RelyX Unicem, G-Cem) re… Show more

“…Gluma did not contribute to improve the bond strength, because Gluma has a better mechanism of action when used to etch-and-rinse approach, when occurs the rewet or the restablishment of the collagen fibrils [24]. Regarding the SEM analysis, the micrographs showed semi-closed dentinal tubules, but it did not form a thick coating, and 50% mixed failures (between adhesive and cohesive in resin cement), 30% adhesive and 20% cohesive failures in resin cement failures (Figure 2).…”

“…Gluma Desensit izer is a gluta ra ldehydeb a s e s u b s t a n c e t h a t c o n t a i n s H E M A (2 -hydroxyethylmethacrylate), causing the coagulation of the dentin fluid proteins in the dentinal tubules and plugs the tubules [6,24]. In fact, glutaraldehyde causes coagulation of proteins inside the dentinal tubules, reacting with the albumin in the dentinal fluid, thus causing the precipitation of albumin and blockage of tubules.…”

“…They have been shown to close dentinal tubules by precipitative intratubular occlusion and thereby to a significant decrease of dentin permeability, even under clinical conditions [9, 10]. As a positive side effect, glutaraldehyde disinfects dentin in vitro and seems compatible with adhesive systems [11, 12]. However, potential biocompatibility hazards should not be neglected [13, 14].…”

“…Fourth, more than one source of failure is controlling defects. As far as the first point is considered, the literature showed clearly that the shear bond strength values lower than 5 MPa could be measured [35,36,37].…”
