The effect of curricular activities on learner autonomy: the perspective of undergraduate mechanical engineering students

Abstract: This study researches how first-year engineering students perceived the influence of curricular activities on their own learning autonomy, measured with an adaptation of the Personal Responsibility Orientation to Self-direction in Learning Scale (PRO-SDLS). Participants were questioned to assess the influence of the teacher's role. The results indicate that learners' characteristics (motivation and self-efficacy) contribute more to learner autonomy (LA) than the teaching-learning transaction (control and initi… Show more

“…This implies that they are not ready to cooperate with their professors in designing plans related to their courses. This is consistent with a study done by Duarte, Leite, and Mouraz (2015) which found out that regardless of the degree of autonomy in learning, all participants viewed teachers as the main source of information.…”

“…EA EA (Engineers Australia) is an Australian accreditation body that ensures the quality of the engineering trainingthrough accreditation of the engineering programs [7]. Table 1: Engineering accreditation bodies In this work we are particularly interested in identifying the soft skills required by the accreditation bodiesabove mentioned in table 1.For this purpose, we've conducted an extensive literature review based on recent articles [4,5,6,11,8,9,10,13]and recently revised accreditation textbooks [7,12,14,15].This study has led to a list of the following soft skills:…”

“…It is not the latest issue of promoting students' autonomous learning in language education (Duarte et al, 2016). It has received much concern from experts and scholars in the second language acquisition field (SLA) (Smith, 2003).…”

“…He proposed that learner autonomy means that students can decide the learning content, and methods, track the progress, and evaluate the learning outcome by themselves (Holec, 1981cited in Milosavljević, 2017. In other words, it means the ability of someone could take charge of his or her own learning (Duarte et al, 2016). However the issue of the role of teachers in promoting students' autonomous learning and what degree they intervene in language teaching class, the concern was less than learners aspects (Smith, 2003).…”
