The Effect of Ankle-Foot Orthoses on Community-Based Walking in Cerebral Palsy

Abstract: Purpose Examine effect of ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) on walking activity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods We used a randomized cross-over design with 11 children with bilateral CP, mean age 4.3 years. Subjects were randomized to current AFO-ON or AFO-OFF for 2 weeks and then crossed over. Walking activity (average total steps/day), intensity and stride rate curves were collected via ankle accelerometer. Group effects were examined with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and within subject effects exam… Show more

“…Двигательные нарушения при ДЦП часто сочетаются с умственной отсталостью, эпилептическими припадками, трудностями обучения. Иногда у ребенка параллельно отмечаются патологические изменения со стороны зрения, слуха, чувствительности и со стороны внутренних органов, которые усугубляют степень задержки психомоторного развития [9].…”

“…Ciddi çömelme yürüyüşünde ve sert varus, valgus deformiteli ayaklarda kullanılmaz. [10] Abel ve ark. 1998 yılında SP'li 35 yürüyen hasta üzerinde yaptıkları araştırmada çıplak ayağa göre, solid AFO kullananlarda erken topuk kalkışı ve ayak-ayak bileği kinematiğinde ilerleme olmasına rağmen diz ve kalça kinematiğinde büyük bir değişiklik görmemişlerdir.…”

“…Ankle foot orthosis (AFO) plays an important role in treatment of patients with neuromuscular impairments, such as cerebral palsy (CP) [1]. The AFOs are prescribed aiming the prevention and/or correction of foot deformities, function improvement, ankle efficiency and performance, facilitating functional activities, such as gait, of children with CP [2,3]. Therefore, the non-use of AFOs by patients with CP can deteriorate their gait and joints range of motion [4].…”
