The edible mushroomLaetiporus sulphureusas potential source of natural antioxidants

Abstract: Hot water extract (LN), partially purified polysaccharides (LP) and hot alkali extracted polysaccharides (LNa) obtained from fruiting bodies of the wild basidiomycete Laetiporus sulphureus were examined for their antioxidant activities. LNa was the most active antioxidant, as shown by the median effective concentrations (EC50 values) of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity (0.5 ± 0.2 mg/ml), reducing power (4.0 ± 0.3 mg/ml) and ferrous ion-chelating ability (1.5 ± 0.1 mg/ml). LNa contained … Show more

“…In recent years, T. mongolicum Imai has drawn more and more attention because of its bioactivities. Polysaccharides isolated from T. mongolicum Imai (TMIPs) have multiple activities, such as antioxidant (Klaus et al, 2013;Nandi et al, 2014), antitumor (Mizuno et al, 1990;Song, Liu, Kong, Chang, & Song, 2013) and hepatoprotective effects (Liu et al, 2014a).…”

“…Because of oxidative stress induced by free radicals, serious health problems such as neurological, cardiologic diseases, cirrhosis, diabetes, leukemia and necrosis may occur. 12,13,14 Investigation of antioxidant activity and oxidative stress index of mushrooms as potent natural antioxidant used in inhibition of oxidative stress is very important to determination of new natural antioxidant materials. Heavy metal contents in mushrooms are higher than agricultural plants, vegetables and fruits.…”

“…10 Thus the mushroom is often called as "crab of the woods", "chicken of the woods", "chicken polypore" or "chicken mushroom" and can be considered as an alternate for chicken in vegetarian diet. 5 This unique fragrance and texture have influenced the use of young fruit bodies as a valuable food source for many years in oriental cultures. Unlike other polypores, the mushroom has a long history of consumption especially in North America, Japan and Thailand where it is considered a delicacy.…”
