“…23 One program's report of 200 residents, however, found high rates of personal therapy and concluded that the experience was valuable in fostering maturation, resolution of conflicts, and career development. 24 A survey of therapist trainees in the United Kingdom found that they gave an overwhelmingly positive assessment of therapy's usefulness, including increased self-awareness, increased self-esteem, improved work competence, and heightened empathy. 13 While the UK trainees noted that personal therapy sometimes increased both psychological distress and marital stress, they nonetheless felt that the benefits significantly outweighed the risks.…”

On the other hand, the 1976 paper "The Disturbed and Disturbing Psychiatric Resident" [7] distinguished between suffering from a diagnosed psychiatric illness ("disturbed") and behaviors concerning to faculty or staff ("disturbing"). The authors found that three quarters of residents in their sample with psychiatric illness and concerning behaviors were nonetheless able to successfully complete their residency.…”

“…(Campbell, 1982;Garetz, Raths & Morse, 1976;Glass, 1986).
