The Distribution of Endoscopic Gastritis in 25,536 Heath Check-up Subjects in Korea

Abstract: Background/Aims: Chronic gastritis is a common finding during endoscopy and it is very important to describe it correctly. This study was designed to evaluate the distribution of endoscopic gastritis and the differences according to age, sex or area. Materials and Methods: A clinical analysis was conducted on 25,536 subjects who had undergone an upper endoscopy for routine health check-up. Endoscopic gastritis was classified into four types, superficial gastritis, erosive gastritis, atrophic gastritis and inte… Show more

“… 42 A multicenter study of Republic of Korea in 2006, with 25,536 asymptomatic subjects assigned, evaluated that the prevalences of endoscopic AG and IM were 27.1% and 7.1%, which were lower than those estimated with histologic diagnoses. 43 The proportions of AG and IM in patients aged 40 years or less were 14.9% and 2.7%, and in those aged 60 years or more were 43.5% and 12.3%. This study showed that the prevalence of AG and IM increased significantly with age and male.…”

“… However, there was a sex difference in the pattern of gastritis in a multicenter study of 25 536 Koreans. For instance, the incidence of erosive gastritis, atrophy, and IM was higher in males than in females; thus, sex differences in addition to H pylori should be analyzed in terms of the prevalence or grade of atrophy/IM.…”

“…The prevalence of AG and IM increased signifi cantly with age for both men and women [ 41 ]. When a multicenter study of South Korea in 2006, with 25,536 asymptomatic subjects, evaluated the prevalence of endoscopic AG and IM, they were 27.1 % and 7.1 %, respectively, which were lower than those estimated with histological diagnoses [ 42 ]. The proportions of endoscopic AG and IM in the patients aged 40 years or less were 14.9 % and 2.7 %, respectively, and in those aged 60 years or more were 43.5 % and 12.3 %, respectively [ 42 ].…”

This study showed that the prevalence of AG and IM increased significantly with age and more frequent in male than in female [ 42 ]. Interestingly, the prevalence of endoscopic AG and IM were 40.7 % and 12.5 % in a multicenter study of 4,023 subjects in 2011, signifi cantly higher than those of a multicenter study in 2006 [ 43 ].…”
