Atrophic gastritis (AG) and intestinal metaplasia (IM) are the main precursor lesions of gastric cancer as the incidence of gastric cancer increases in the gastric mucosa involved with AG and IM. The prevalence of AG and IM vary depending on countries, even it represents diverse results in the same nation. Usually AG is antecedent of IM but the etiologies of AG and IM are not always the same. The sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic methods to detect AG and IM are different. Furthermore, the management strategy of AG and IM has not been established, yet. Helicobacter pylori infection has been proved as the most important cause of AG and IM. Thus the eradication of H. pylori is very important to prevent the progression to gastric cancer which is still placed in the high rank in morbidity and mortality among cancers. However, the reversibility of AG and IM by eradication of H. pylori which was assumed to be certain by meta-analysis is; however, controversial now. Therefore, the understanding and early diagnosis of AG and IM are very important, especially, in high incidence area of gastric cancer such as Republic of Korea.
Chlorogenic acid may be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of anti-inflammatory diseases.
ObjectivesPostoperative hemorrhage is a potentially life-threatening complication in thyroid surgery. This study was performed to review the clinical patterns of post-thyroidectomy hemorrhage, and especially as they are related to the source of bleeding.MethodsWe performed a retrospective review of 10 patients (0.96%) with post-thyroidectomy hemorrhage that required surgical evacuation. The clinical patterns such as the time interval from surgery to hemorrhage and the signs and symptoms according to the bleeding focus were evaluated.ResultsThe mean time interval from surgery to symptom onset was 7 hr 52 min. Six cases showed bleeding deep to the strap muscles, while the other 4 cases showed bleeding superficial to the muscles. Ecchymosis was prominent and dark in color in 3 of the 4 cases (75%) of superficial bleeding, however it was identified in only 2 of the 6 cases (33%) of deep bleeding. Respiratory distress occurred in two cases of hematoma deep to the strap muscles, but in none of the cases with superficial bleeding.ConclusionThe post-thyroidectomy hemorrhage had some different clinical patterns between the superficial cases and the deep cases, showing that life-threatening airway obstruction occurred from the deep hematoma. A thorough understanding of the clinical patterns of post-thyroidectomy hemorrhage between the cases of superficial and those cases of deep hematoma may provide valuable surgical tips to manage this potentially lethal complication.
Adsorption and UV/visible photocatalytic activity of echinoid-like Ag and Ti-loaded BiOI were tested for methyl orange, Rhodamine B and methylene blue.
Background:Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model is used for research of inflammatory bowel disease. The aim of this study was to establish the adequate conditions for DSS mice model, and to find useful tool to measure inflammation. Methods:The 2.5% DSS was administered to six male C57BL/6 mice and 4% DSS to eight mice at 5 or 9 weeks of age. Each group was consisted of 6 mice with control group in which vehicle was administered instead of DSS. The mice were sacrificed on the 7th day after DSS or vehicle administration. Body weight, diarrhea, and hematochezia were recorded daily. Disease activity index (DAI) score which was composed of body weight change, diarrhea, and hematochezia was measured every day. Colon length was measured after sacrifice and colon mucosal level of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) was measured by ELISA assay. Histological score was compared between ascending and descending colon in the DSS group. Results:Colon length of five- and nine-week DSS group was significantly shorter than each control group but there was no statistical significance depending on DSS concentration or age. DAI score of 4% DSS group in nine-week was significantly higher than that five-week (P = 0.012) but there was no difference between 2.5% and 4% DSS group. The level of IL-1β in DSS mice was much higher than control group (P < 0.01), but there was no difference among several DSS groups. The histological score was higher in the descending colon than in the ascending colon but there was no statistical difference between each pair of DSS groups. Conclusions:The 4% DSS mice in nine-week was adequate for DSS-induced colitis model. DAI score was useful tool and descending colon was more appropriate site for histological evaluation of colitis than ascending colon.
RhoA GTPase plays a variety of functions in regulation of cytoskeletal proteins, cellular morphology, and migration along with various proliferation and transcriptional activity in cells. RhoA activity is regulated by guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs), GTPase activating proteins (GAPs), and the guanine nucleotide dissociation factor (GDI). The RhoA-RhoGDI complex exists in the cytosol and the active GTP-bound form of RhoA is located to the membrane. GDI displacement factors (GDFs) including IκB kinase γ (IKKγ) dissociate the RhoA-GDI complex, allowing activation of RhoA through GEFs. In addition, modifications of Tyr42 phosphorylation and Cys16/20 oxidation in RhoA and Tyr156 phosphorylation and oxidation of RhoGDI promote the dissociation of the RhoA-RhoGDI complex. The expression of RhoA is regulated through transcriptional factors such as c-Myc, HIF-1α/2α, Stat 6, and NF-κB along with several reported microRNAs. As the role of RhoA in regulating actin-filament formation and myosin-actin interaction has been well described, in this review we focus on the transcriptional activity of RhoA and also the regulation of RhoA message itself. Of interest, in the cytosol, activated RhoA induces transcriptional changes through filamentous actin (F-actin)-dependent ("actin switch") or-independent means. RhoA regulates the activity of several transcription regulators such as serum response factor (SRF)/MAL, AP-1, NF-κB, YAP/TAZ, β-catenin, and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α. Interestingly, RhoA also itself is localized to the nucleus by an as-yet-undiscovered mechanism.
A novel enantioselective synthetic method for the construction of a quaternary carbon center from malonates via phase-transfer catalytic (PTC) alkylation has been developed. The asymmetric α-alkylation of diphenylmethyl tert-butyl α-alkylmalonates with alkylating agents under phase-transfer catalysis conditions (aq 50% KOH, toluene, 0°C) in the presence of (S,S)-3,4,5-trifluorophenyl-NAS bromide (8) as PTC catalyst afforded the corresponding α,α-dialkylmalonates in high chemical (up to 99%) and optical yields (up to 97% ee) which could be readily converted to versatile chiral intermediates. Notably, the direct double α-alkylations of diphenylmethyl tert-butyl malonate also provided the corresponding α,α-dialkylmalonates without loss of enantioselectivity. The synthetic potential of this method has been demonstrated by the preparation of α,α-dialkylamino acid and oxindole systems.
