The Dimensionality of a Modified Form of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for University Students in a Teacher-Training Program

Abstract: For a sample of 147 fifth-year students enrolled in a teacher training program at the elementary school level, both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses involving orthogonal and oblique solutions were carried out on a correlation matrix of scores on 22 items from a self-report inventory of teacher burnout that was adapted with permission from the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The modifications incorporated within the new instrument, which is referred to as the College Student Survey (CSS), constitut… Show more

“…While depersonalization remained a single factor, the superior model also incorporates two aspects of personal accomplishment (self and others). The results differ from previous con®rmatory factor analyses of the MBI (Byrne, 1993;Gold et al, 1989;Lee and Ashforth, 1990) which did not examine a ®ve-factor structure. Further research is needed to test the ®ve-factor structure with a range of samples and using longitudinal research designs.…”

“…However, several studies (Firth et al, 1985;Iwanicki and Schwab, 1981;Powers and Gose, 1986) found that the MBI measures four factors, while others (Brookings et al, 1985;Dignam et al, 1986;Green et al, 1991) maintained that the MBI measures only two factors. Recently, studies using con®rmatory factor analyses (Byrne, 1993;Gold et al, 1989;Lee and Ashforth, 1990;Schaufeli and Van Dierendonck, 1993) have identi®ed the original three-factor model as superior to several alternative models. However, have argued that virtually no adequate attempt has been made to test the factorial validity of the MBI.…”
