Purpose Digitization is reshaping the functioning of educational institutions. Large attention has been paid to the innovative service models enabled by digitization. However, the implications of digitization on employees’ well-being need further investigation. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of digitization on psycho-social risks at work in a large sample of European educational institutions. Design/methodology/approach Secondary data were collected from the third wave of the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER). A serial mediation model was designed to obtain evidence on the implications of digitization on the psycho-social risks at work in 3,540 educational institutions. Alongside the direct implications of digitization on psycho-social risks, its indirect effects mediated by occupational health interventions and healthy workplace initiatives were investigated. Findings Digitization exacerbated psycho-social stressors at work. Increasing time pressures and intensifying work, digitization imperiled the employees’ well-being. Occupational health partially mediated the implications of digitization on psycho-social risks. Although healthy workplace interventions seemed to prevent the side effects of digitization on psycho-social risk, its mediating role was not statistically significant. Practical implications Digitization should be accompanied by interventions aimed at ensuring occupational health and at promoting a healthy workplace to minimize its drawbacks on psycho-social risks. Occupational health creates a greater awareness of the negative effects of digitization on work-related stressors. Healthy workplace initiatives contribute to enhancing the employees’ psycho-physical well-being. Originality/value This study reports the negative implications of digitization on psycho-social risks at work in educational institutions, envisioning some avenues for further development.

The study looks into the validation and analysis of the psychometric properties of the Techno-Work Engagement Scale (TechnoWES-9) in the case of a sample of Romanian employees (N=280). The scale is based on the concept of work engagement and evaluates the well-being generated by the use of technology at the workplace. The tool includes three factors: techno-vigor, techno-dedication, and techno-absorption, each with three items. The factorial structure was verified through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and the reliability of the scale was examined from the perspective of its internal consistency. The concurrent validity was performed by associating scales that assess subjective well-being. The CFA supports the tri-factorial structure of the scale. The internal consistency of the total score is excellent. TechnoWES-9 is positively associated with subjective well-being, life satisfaction, and positive affect. None of the dimensions of the scale correlates with negative affect. The study suggests that the Romanian version of TechnoWES-9 is an adequate measure for the assessment of well-being of Romanian employees working in digital technology.

Risk factors for digital stress in German public administrations

Objective As the digitization of the working world progresses, the demands on employees change. Not least, this is true for the setting of public administrations in Germany, which is currently affected by the transformation to E-Government. This study aims to identify and describe a risk cluster of digitally stressed employees in public administrations. Methods An online sample of 710 employees from three public administrations in North Rhine-Westphalia were surveyed about digital stress (7 items) and several potential risk factors (19 items) derived from the current research. In the first step, a hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis is used to detect the risk cluster. This is followed by a comparison to the group of the remaining employees regarding their risk profiles. Results The analysis states that the digitally stressed cluster accounts for approximately ten percent of the public administration’s employees of the total sample. Employees in the risk cluster are less satisfied with on-site work overall, experience less collegial support on-site, experience less collegial support in the home office, resign more often, are more likely to feel overwhelmed, are less educated, are older in age and more often have relatives in need of care. Conclusion This work was able to identify and describe a group of digitally stressed rather than left-behind employees in public administrations to bring awareness to potentially destructive factors in the digital transformation process but eventually to social inequalities. The findings offer the basis for interventions to arise and evoke potential for further research.
