“…or Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Leguminosae, which is one of the ancient and worldwide popular herbs native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. With multifunctional ingredients, licorice has beneficial applications in both fields of food and medicine (Peng et al., 2021). It has been on the list of homologous materials of medicine and food with great value, according to the National Health Commission of China.…”

“…The Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) is a widely-utilized supervised pattern recognition model that enhances the explanatory ability of variables. [32] However, when it comes to analyzing and interpreting data with multiple variables and groups, it can be quite challenging to pinpoint the exact contribution of each variable to the group difference. Hence, we build five OPLS-DA models based on the unsupervised pattern recognition model results for two-by-two comparisons to find essential variables between two groups.…”

“…At present, the comprehensive quality evaluation of Chinese medicinal materials usually adopts analysis methods such as full component analysis, fingerprinting, or characteristic atlas, and determines the quality of medicinal materials from the type and content of chemical components. For example, Peng et al [13] established the fingerprint of the water extract and ethanol extract of licorice by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and used similarity analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), and other stoichiometric methods to screen the difference markers of licorice from different origins for quality evaluation of licorice. Nie et al [14] used UPLC-ESI-Q-TOF/MS and GC/MS technologies to analyze the chemical components of four cultivars of Chrysanthemi Flos and combined PCA and similarity evaluation system to establish a multi-modal quantitative method to control and identify the four cultivars of Chrysanthemi Flos.…”
