The current status of the experimental analysis of verbal behavior.

Abstract: Sixty years have passed since the publication of Skinner’s (1957) Verbal Behavior. Although its influence on empirical research was limited in the past, there has recently been a proliferation of both applied and basic research studies related to this work. This article provides an overview of the research topics represented in 369 empirical research articles on verbal behavior published between 2005 and 2016 that were identified in a prior study (Petursdottir & Devine, 2017). Comments on the current status of… Show more

“…Language has begun to be framed within the paradigm of the analysis of verbal behavior, backed by laws that have proven to be replicable, empirical, and generalizable [35]. For this reason, there has been a considerable increase in the number of studies that follow this methodological approach [36][37][38].…”

“…Furthermore, according to the literature review conducted by Petursdottir [38], the tact was one of the most researched topics during the last decade. A tact is a verbal operant that includes a vocal verbal response controlled by nonverbal stimuli or one of their properties, and it is supported and maintained by generalized reinforcement [34,45,47].…”

“…Os desafios para uma análise experimental da proposta skinneriana resultaram em várias décadas nas quais o comportamento verbal permaneceu inexplorado (Petursdottir, 2018). A despeito das reações pouco promissoras da época, havia, a favor da interpretação skinneriana da linguagem, argumentos de que os operantes verbais são simples e facilmente compreendidos empregando-se os princípios comportamentais básicos (Catânia, 1999).…”

“…An increase in empirical support for Skinner’s analysis (Dymond et al., 2006; Eshleman, 1991; Petursdottir & Devine, 2017) has allowed for more detailed reviews of verbal behavior research (e.g., Dixon et al., 2007; Petursdottir, 2018; Sautter & LeBlanc, 2006). An analysis by Sautter and LeBlanc (2006) showed additional support for Skinner’s functional approach.…”
