The crossing of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with cultivated rye (Secale cereale L.). II. Fertilization and early post-fertilization developments

Abstract: Fertilization and early seed development was studied in the variety Chinese Spring of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) after pollination with rye (Secale cereale L .) and selfing, and in the common wheat variety Hope after selfing . In all three combinations the first pollen tube reached the micropyle in about 40 min after pollination . When pollinated with rye the migration of the sperm nuclei to the egg cell and the polar nuclei was delayed by about an hour . In the subsequent development until 72 hours a… Show more

“…The mechanism for low crossability seems to involve the inhibition of alien pollen tubes somewhere between the base of the stigma and the micropyle (LANGE & WOJCIECHOWSKA, 1976 ;WOJCIECHOWSKA & LANGE, 1977 ;Tozu, 1966 ;ZEVEN & VAN HEEMERT, 1970) . It is suggested that the ovule nonspecifically excludes all pollen except those which are recognised as `self and that the role of genes for low crossability is to narrow the basis for such recognition .…”

“…Одна из проблем, препятствующих успешным скрещиваниям пшеницы с представителями родов Aegilops L., Hordeum L. и Secale L., -наличие прогамной несовместимости (Pershina, Trubacheeva, 2017), выражающейся в замедлении или ингибировании роста пыльцевых трубок (Zeven, Van Heemert, 1970;Lange, Wojciechowska, 1976, 1977Jalani, Moss, 1981). У мягкой пшеницы обнаружено пять генов -Kr1, Kr2, Kr3, Kr4 (Crossability with Rye and Hordeum and Aegilops spp.)…”

“…Many studies have been conducted on the synthesis of wheat-rye hybrids but most of these studies focused on the crossability (seed set) per se of either hexaploid (Lein, 1943;Riley & Chapman, 1967;Lange & Wojciechowska, 1976;Wojciechowska & Lange, 1977;Jalani & Moss, 1980;Falk & Kasha, 1983) or tetraploid wheats (Jalani & Moss, 1981;Oettler, 1982;Verzea, 1990). …”
