The Contact Problem in Ultrasonic Traveling-Wave Motors

Abstract: In this paper the contact mechanism between stator and rotor will be considered in detail, which plays a key role in ultrasonic motors. A planar contact model for the stator-rotor interaction in traveling-wave type ultrasonic motors is derived, including rotor flexibility and differenciating between stick and slip regions in the contact zones. The model analysis shows that depending on the motor’s operating conditions, complicated contact behavior may occur with several stick-slip subzones in each contact zone… Show more

“…Indeed, modeling of contact mechanics and control of piezoelectric motors to clarify the nature of the operating principal and to optimize performance has always been an important study area in the field of piezoelectric motors [78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87].…”

“…Because the friction forces depend mainly on factors such as the coefficient of static/dynamic friction, and considering the forces and stresses at the interface between the stator and the rotor, the normal contact pressure and the relative motion of interfaces, two different types of “friction” should be distinguished [8,13]. …”

“…The energy conversion efficiency of the second stage is discussed in detail in this paper. Because the intermittent contact between the stator and the rotor is cyclical, it is possible to choose a contact cycle to analyse the energy conversion characteristics [13]. The power transferred to the rotor is: Pout=Tt+TMLωRdt…”

“…The wear of FM result in the variations of preload, the coefficients of KelvinVoigt model (equivalent stiffness k n and k t , equivalent damping c n and c t ) and the topography of friction surfaces. Sattel et al 12 proposed a planar contact model for the stator-rotor interaction and the results show that preload has influence on the resonance frequency of the operational eigenmode. Endo et al 13 researched the propulsion force and velocity of ultrasonic motor under different preload.…”
