OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate which characteristics of athlete, wheelchair and athlete-wheelchair interface are the best predictors of wheelchair basketball mobility performance. DESIGN: Sixty experienced wheelchair basketball players performed a wheelchair mobility performance test to assess their mobility performance. To determine which variables were the best predictors of mobility performance, forward stepwise linear regression analyses were performed on a set of 33 characteristics, including ten athlete, nineteen wheelchair and four athlete-wheelchair interface characteristics. RESULTS: Eight of the characteristics turned out to be significant predictors of wheelchair basketball mobility performance. Classification, experience, maximal isometric force, wheel axis height and hand rim diameter -which both interchangeable with each other and wheel diameter -camber angle, and the vertical distance between shoulder and rear wheel axis -which was interchangeable with seat height -were positively associated with mobility performance. The vertical distance between the front seat and the footrest was negatively associated with mobility performance. CONCLUSION:With this insight, coaches and biomechanical specialists are provided with statistical findings to determine which characteristics they could focus on best to improve mobility performance. Six out of eight predictors are modifiable and can be optimized to improve mobility performance. These adjustments could be carried out both in training (maximal isometric force) and in wheelchair configurations (e.g. camber angle).

SummaryStudy aim: To determine and compare the time under tension (TUT) required to perform 8, 10 and 12 repetition maximum (RM) loads in the bench press exercise. Material and methods: Twenty men (24.17 ± 4.69 years) were selected intentionally and properly. We included in the study physically active individuals, with a weekly frequency of physical activity of at least two days for six months, and excluded individuals with injury or pain that could interfere with the correct execution of the exercise and individuals with positive PAR-Q. The 10-RM test consisted in performing ten consecutive repetitions with maximum overload and the highest speed in bench press exercise on the Smith machine. After 48 h, 10-RM sets were performed with the load obtained in the 10-RM load testing. The TUT in 10-RM was verified through kinematics using the timing technique of the Kinovea software. Results: The RM loads and TUT obtained during the retest session showed normal distribution between subjects. However, no significant differences were found between the loads 8, 10 and 12-RM within and between subjects (p < 0.05). The verified TUT showed a difference from 8 to 10-RM and from 8 to 12-RM, but no significant difference was found between TUT protocols for 10 and 12-RM (p < 0.05). Conclusion:The study results enable evaluation of TUT in bench press exercise on the Smith machine for the study sample, allowing, for this group, the prediction and control of training intensity through the TUT.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the New Shooting Accuracy Measurement Software (SAMS). Thirty two male collegian soccer players performed three inner side kicking to the transparent goal construction. A High speed camera was placed at the back of the construction to determine where the ball contacted. Recorded video results were assessed with the SAMS and Kinovea software. To investigate test-retest reliability, three kicking results were examined twice by SAMS. Moreover kicking accuracy results obtained with SAMS were compared with results provided by Kinovea in order to investigate validity. Test-retest reproducibility of the new software was excellent, with Concordance Correlation Coefficient for distance to target (0.99, 0.99 and 0.99 respectively) and for angular degree of the ball (0.97, 0.99 and 0.99 respectively), low Coefficients of Variation (between 2.10 to 6.33 for distance to target and 2.40 to 2.69 for angular degree) and random error (between 0.55 to 3.44 for distance to target and 0.63 to 2.75 for angular degree). Constant error (between 0.44 to 1.28 for distance to target and -1.16 to -2.51 for angular degree) and proportional error (between 0.97 to 0.98 for distance to target and 1.00 to 1.01 for angular degree) were very low for validity. In conclusion, the SAMS represents a valid and reliable instrument to measure accuracy of shooting to target.
