The computational fluid dynamic modeling of downwash flow field for a six-rotor UAV

Abstract: The downwash flow field of the multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), formed by propellers during operation, has a significant influence on the deposition, drift and distribution of droplets as well as the spray width of the UAV for plant protection. To study the general characteristics of the distribution of the downwash airflow and simulate the static wind field of multi-rotor UAVs in hovering state, a 3D full-size physical model of JF01-10 six-rotor plant protection UAV was constructed using SolidWorks.… Show more

“…In terms of China Agricultural University, the team containing Zheng and Yang simulated the downwash flowing field of a type of six-rotor UAV, JF 01-10. The features and characteristics of the downwash field were obtained [59] , but the computation cost was high and further validation is needed to examine the models. Then, they conducted a qualitative test to try to verify the distribution of an eight-rotor downwash.…”

“…In regards to the choice of sUAS flight platform, and optimal integration of sensor to the platform, the effects of the flow field of the sUAS should be further considered. In particular, the effect of the downwash caused by the rotating rotor blades [35,36] can distort the shape (concentration field) of the methane plume, which could then complicate the use of algorithms to infer source mass flow based on the measured flow field. Indeed, future research will focus on inferring mass-flow (and source location) from the sUAS methane concentration maps and wind data [15,[37][38][39].…”

“…ANSYS was used to develop the CFD models of both the real-used UAV and the scaled-down drone. In terms of the real-used UAV CFD models, Figure 6 shows the CFD results of the real-used UAV by the previous study [23] . Mesh in Workbench was used for meshing and Fluent in Workbench was used as the solver.…”
