“…In a similar study, comparing the effects of listening to classical music and Quran-e-Kareem, it was observed that Quranic recitation demonstrated a positive transformation of the subjects' emotions from negative precursor emotions to calmness and happiness. 15 These positive emotions were denoted by a positive valence for the EEG and ECG signals. In contrast, classical music showed a positive transformation with regard to the valence in the EEG analysis, however, with respect to the ECG music data analysis, the results revealed a negative transformation for most of the music tracks.…”
Background: Quranic recitation and music do not share any features in terms of content besides the use of melodies, but it is a common belief, that both have positive effect on reducing blood pressure and anxiety level of patients. This research investigates and compares the effects of listening to Quranic recitation and soft music on human brain waves especially Alpha and Beta waves by electroencephalogram (EEG) using Power-Lab.Material and Methods: A clinical trial was carried out in the Physiology Department of Islamabad Medical and Dental College. There were 22 participants, divided into two groups (A and B) with 11 participants in each group. Group A included students with ages 20-25 years and Group B comprised of teaching faculty between 40-60 years. All the study participants were Urdu-speaking, Pakistani Muslims having normal hearing. Sample selection was based on non-random convenient sampling. Paired T-test was used to compare means of Alpha and Beta waves amplitude, with p value < 0.05 considered as statistically significant. Results: Listening to Quranic recitation results in greater amplitude of Alpha waves in both younger and older age groups (p=0.01). The cross comparisons of systolic blood pressure at rest and after music for Group A showed significant results (p=0.04) indicating that soft music increases systolic blood pressure in younger people. Diastolic blood pressure comparison proves that it decreases by Tilawat in older age-groups (p<0.05).Conclusion: EEG showed that Quran generates comparatively higher amplitudes of Alpha than Beta waves, which reflects the calmness and relaxation of the participants while listening to Quranic recitation. Furthermore, there was a mild reduction in diastolic blood pressure in older subjects after listening to Quranic recitation.
“…For example, there are studies reporting the positive effect of listening to Qur'anic recitation on a sleepy driver [81] and the effect of reciting the Qur'an on mental health [82]. When comparing between listening to Qur'anic recitation or music, higher percentage of alpha waves were generated by the former [83,84]. Alpha waves have been associated with the state of inner peace, for example the link was demonstrated through meditation [85].…”

“…Alpha waves have been associated with the state of inner peace, for example the link was demonstrated through meditation [85]. Since listening to Qur'anic recitations and/or doing the recitations are able to increase the level of inner peace to an individual, Qur'anic therapy can be beneficial to autistic children who have emotional problems [84]. As an alternative sound therapy, Qur'anic verses, with specific messages/contents, have added values for its listeners, including autistic children.…”

Autism is a neural development disorder characterized by the deterioration in social interacttion, abnormal language expression, repetitive actions, imaginative game tendencies, and limited and/or obsessiveness in certain activities/ interests. Lack of sleep is one of the factors contributing to the worsening of overall negative symptoms of autistic children. From the Islamic perspective, sleep is a necessity and could function as a treatment for health problems, in addition to influencing behavior patterns. Sound therapy has been used in dealing with various health problems, including sleep problems and mental ill health. Possibly, it can also address sleep problems of the autistic children. Listening to the melodious Qur'anic recitation is known to have therapeutic effects even on individuals who do not understand the meaning of the verses being read; it could function as sound therapy. However, no established work has been done to study the effect of Qur'anic verses recitation on autistic children and their sleep problems. Similar to the use of music therapy, Qur'anic recitation is also expected to have a positive impact on speech, learning and interpersonal relationship. As a healing medium, Qur'anic therapy is also expected to have a better result as compared to other conventional sound therapy since its content could be psychotherapeutic.
