The combined use of cytological imprint and frozen section in the intraoperative diagnosis of ovarian tumors

Abstract: Intra-operative diagnosis by cytological imprint and frozen sectioning supplemented by paraffin impregnation were carried out on 50 suspected ovarian tumors. The combined cytologic and cryostat methods gave an accuracy rate of 90% compared to 84% and 74% of either method used separately, and in a short time.

“…Following this, several studies which were done in the past have discussed the use of imprint and touch preparations, especially as a tool for making the intraoperative diagnoses [4][5][6]. Few studies have documented ovarian cytological features in the imprint smears which were obtained during intraoperative procedures [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. In this study, the routine use of cytological imprint smears allowed us to document these features and to underscore the advantages and the limitations of the technique.…”

“…Although relatively few studies have specifically examined cytological assessment of ovarian masses, these have shown promising results. [21][22][23][24] Indeed, in some centers, cytological preparations have been used as the initial diagnostic modality with frozen section restricted to problem cases. 24 The current study illustrated the advantages of intraoperative cytology in the assessment of ovarian masses.…”

“…Preoperative and rapid intra-operative consultation is often called for. [5][6][7][8] In gynecologic surgeries frozen section is not often called for. However there is an increase in the preoperative FNA diagnosis being sought.…”

“…However there is an increase in the preoperative FNA diagnosis being sought. 5 Knowing the cyto-morphology of ovarian lesions will help in diagnosing lesions on FNA. Imprint cytology, as also scrape cytology offers the advantage of viewing the gross, giving serial cuts, taking multiple, representative samples and most importantly, being inexpensive and logistically un-demanding.…”
