The Centrality of Context in Learning from Further Class Size Research

Abstract: Educational researchers have conducted numerous studies regarding the effects of class size on student learning, yet the disparity of their findings make it difficult to draw overall conclusions. This paper first provides a description of some of the major class size studies in an effort to illustrate this point. Next, a research approach is suggested which might yield more definitive conclusions by carefully accounting for the additional contextual factors which surround class size. In addition to giving part… Show more

“…Those studies tend to bring together results of smaller-scale studies (see Robinson 1990). Perhaps the most important criticism relates to the need to pay closer attention to factors that relate to class size, such as teacher effects (e.g., improved quality of teaching, increased moral, and better attitudes) and student effects (e.g., increased need to pay attention, improved pupil-to-pupil relationships, less disruptive behavior, and more time on task) (see Englehart 2007).…”

“…Although the connection between class size and educational attainment is clear (if not necessarily well understood as to why it might exist), the translation to public policy has not been. It has been hypothesized that reducing classroom size in particular grades or subjects could benefit children and save taxpayers' money, but their proposals arguing for costs saving have not been widely accepted by economic research (see Englehart 2007). Even if class-size reforms were supported by economic-based research, the reality is that cost-effectiveness has hampered many attempts to reduce class size.…”

“…Die verwendeten Modellierungsaufgaben zu den Inhaltsbereichen "Lineare Funktionen" und "Satz des Pythagoras" (Beispielaufgaben siehe bei Blum und Leiss 2005, 2007 wurden in beiden Untersuchungsbedingungen in der gleichen Reihenfolge behandelt. Vor der Unterrichtseinheit wurde in allen Klassen das Thema "Satz des Pythagoras" eingeführt und anhand von innermathematischen Aufgaben eingeübt.…”
