Bovine herpesvirus 1 in semen of bulls and the risk of transmission: A brief review

Whereas natural breeding with BHV1 contaminated semen does not appear to affect fertility (3,42,45), artificial insemination with BHV1 contaminated semen can result in markedly reduced conception rates, shortened oestrous cycles, and (endo)metritis, the latter being most consistently reported (8,10,26,42,63).…”

“…Insemination of 44 cows with semen containing 32 TCID50 did not lead to antibody development (using a 24-hour neutralization test) in any of them (20). Artificial insemination of cows with doses higher than 105.3 TCID50 always resulted in infection (42,63). Some BHV 1 strains appear to have more affinity for genital organs than other strains, resulting in a more extensive virus replication in uterine body, cervix and corpora lutea.…”
