Bovine herpesvirus 1 in semen of bulls and the risk of transmission: A brief review

Abstract: course of intermittent virus excretion may follow. The seminal plasma rather than the sperm cells contains the BHV1. Diluting the semen before inoculating cell cultures appears to be the best method to neutralize its toxic activity and to achieve optimal virus isolation results.Detection of BHV1 in semen by polymerase chain reaction seems to be more sensitive than virus isolation. Not each extended semen straw contains virus when the vi-

“…No entanto, a correlação desta classificação com parâmetros epidemiológicos e clí-nico-patológicos ainda não está bem definida (Van Oirschot 1995). Os isolados de BoHV-1 associados com abortos pertencem principalmente ao subtipo respiratório (BoHV-1.1) e menos freqüentemente ao subtipo BoHV-1.2a (Edwards et al 1991, Miller et al 1991.…”

“…Genotypes 1.1 and 1.2a are usually more virulent and can be associated to abortions, while strains from genotype 1.2b are usually less virulent and have not been related to abortions (2,10). Although such genomic differences do reflect pathogenic and antigenic differences, to date there is only one recognized antigenic group (16).…”

“…This subtype has often been isolated from the respiratory tract as well as from abortions, and is prevalent in many countries in Europe as well as in the Americas (Edwards et al 1990, Souza et al 2002. BHV-1.2a, on its turn, has been associated to a broad range of clinical manifestations on both the respiratory and genital tracts such as IBR, infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV) or balanopostitis (IPB), as well as abortions (Oirschot 1995). BHV-1.2a is highly prevalent in Brazil; it was present in Europe before the decade of 1970; after that, it became rare in that continent (Oirschot 1995, D'Arce et al 2002.…”

“…BHV-1.2b, on its turn, has been associated to respiratory disease as well as to IPV/IPB. Therefore, subtype 2b has not been related to abortion (Oirschot 1995) and has been considered less pathogenic for the respiratory tract than BHV-1.1 (Edwards et al 1990). Subtype 2b has been frequently isolated in Australia and Europe (Edwards et al 1990), but is uncommon in Brazil where, to date, only one virus of this subtype has been so far isolated.…”
