The production of biofuels through microalgae biomass represents a new generation of raw materials from renewable sources to meet society’s clamors and growing insertion in the market of fuels from products that could grant the planet a sustainable future. The present study assesses the biomass obtained from microalgae Chlorella vulgaris when grown in urban wastewater, extracting the lipids from the biomass and performing Gas Chromatography analysis of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) composition after submitting the lipids through the transesterification process. The microalgae cultivation was monitored through chlorophyll (a) analysis and the highest cell growth was 845.8 µg L-1 using urban wastewater as growth medium. The nutrients of interest were monitored for primary concentration of 8.06 ± 0.06 mg L-1 of ammoniacal nitrogen, 12.27 ± 0.27 mg L-1 of nitrate and 21.22 ± 0.85 mg L-1 of phosphate, reducing about 99% of ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate, along with reducing 87% of phosphate. The lipid constitution extracted from 3.7 g of dry biomass of Chlorella vulgaris after cultivation using urban wastewater, was 7.7%. The lipids extracted from the Chlorella vulgaris biomass are suitable biodiesel production regarding the amounts of FAMEs identified, after the analysis carried out, the comparison of the results obtained with other studies and the hypotheses evaluation.

Microalgae research has attracted interest worldwide and in order to advance algal biotechnology in Brazil, government has been funding several projects. In the last 10 years, two main funds were provided by the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) agency to researchers in Brazil, who study the potential uses of microalgae for biomass, bioproducts and biofuels production. These funded projects addressed aspects of algal strain identification, development of algal cultivation techniques, designing photobioreactors and raceway ponds, modeling harvesting and dewatering process, maximizing biomass and oil productivities, characterizing chemical composition with different extractions systems and determining physiochemical properties of biodiesel. This review presents the state of art of algal research conducted by Brazilian institutions. Special attention is given to the recent progress on microalgal cultivation, high-value products extracted from microalgae and potential biofuels production. This review may serve as a policy instrument for planning next steps for algal research in Brazil as well as for attracting attention from international researchers who work with microalgae and would like to pursue a future partnership on algal research with Brazilian research institutions.

Due the worldwide need to improve care for the environment and people, there is a great demand for the development of new renewable, sustainable, and less polluting technologies for food, health, and environmental industries. The marine environment is one of the main areas investigated in the search for alternatives to the raw materials currently used. Thereby, cyanobacteria and marine microalgae are microorganisms that are capable of producing a diverse range of metabolites useful for their cellular maintenance, but that also represent a great biotechnological potential. Due its great potential, they have an enormous appeal in the scientific research where, the biological activity of metabolites produced by these microorganisms, such as the antioxidant action of sterols are, some examples of biotechnological applications investigated around the world. Thereby, Brazil due to its extensive biodiversity, has high potential as a raw material supplier of marine waters, researching cyanobacteria and microalgae metabolites and their applications. Thus, this rapid review intends to present some important contributions and advances from Brazilian researchers, using the biomass of Brazilian cyanobacteria and marine microalgae, in order to illustrate the value of what has already been discovered and the enormous potential of what remains unexplored so far.
